I had a Korean parent ask me if I could reccommend a good video tape for her child to watch at home to learn English. I told her I'd look into it. Are there any tapes in Korea you'd suggest? Thanks!

We have video time once a week. We usually watch a Disney video in English but also with English subtitles at the bottom. Also, the Richard Scarry series is pretty good (also in English with English subtitles at the bottom).

I have even sometimes given them homework to watch an English TV program or movie (DVD) for 1/2 an hour. In the beginning, they just had to tell me about it the next day but now they have to write at least 3 sentences about it. The parents love it because at least some of their limited TV time must be in English, the kids love it because they get to watch TV for homework, and I'm happy because it helps them with their listening comprehension.

Have her kid watch AFN in the morning.

After watching the Broncos get beat this morning, a program I believe called 'Dora' came on. It's a daily morning show that comes on at 9:00.

The cartoon used very simple English and was interesting. The children can follow the story.

In fact, this cartoon would be good for her mother to tape. Better yet, if you have a VCR, bring in a copy of an episode and you or another teacher can screen it to your Kindy kids.

At my first Kindy job, the children did the same. They would watch a video, act it out and memorize it. This was good for learning more vocabulary, etc. Model the dialogue and make it fun!

Example - when Dora recites - "He's ticklish," simply group hug the kids and tickle them.

I suppose that would depend on the level of the kids. Ours have no problem telling us what the story was about (or even writing about it). I was actually surprised in the beginning how much they understood. However, I have to admit our 2nd year students are pretty advanced. Maybe kids at other hagwons who don't get English for 4 hours a day, five days a week would have more difficulty. Smile
