Just kicked-off
Have to admit, the Chinese are really suffering from Korea-phobia when it comes to playing the Koreans at the round ball game. Certainly had a great chance of putting their barren run against the Koreans to an end (26 matches, no wins) but just fell apart.
At the same time the Koreans are doing better under Huh Jung-moo then I ever thought they would� though admittedly its early days still. |

However, if South Korea draws with Japan, they will likely win this championship. They will certainly finish higher than Japan.
North Korea would then need to beat China by two clear goals to take the championship away from South Korea.
If North Korea wins by one goal, the winner will be decided not on points or goal difference but on who scores more goals. |

by the virtue of having scored more goals.
This is also how South Korea managed to finish above Japan in the first edition of
this tournament, in 2003.
In the 2005 edition South Korea came bottom.

Both South Korea and Japan had a goal difference of +1. In such cases, it is common to give the side that scored more goals the advantage in order to encourage teams to attack rather than sit back and defend for most (all) of the game.
For example:
Italy play Serbia and score a controversial goal in the 5th minute. They then sit in their own half of the field and defend for the next 85 minutes. Serbia doesn't try very hard and Italy wins 1:0.
France play Croatia and the game ends with France winning 4:3. The game goes back and forth and there are plenty of opportunities for both sides.
Both sides finished with a +1 GD, but would you rather watch France and Croatia trying to outscore each other, or Italy score one lucky goal before packing eleven men in the penalty area and praying that Serbia are too lazy or inefficient to change the scoreline?
While I do believe that a 0:0 game can be very exciting, I also see the benefits to rewarding teams who try to play more attack-minded football -- who wants to see every team playing catenaccio, after all? I'd say that granting South Korea the championship due to more goals-scored is hardly a crock. |

South Korea were lucky to win this tournament but when there is so little between the teams, you need luck on your side.
In fact, in the first match it looked like their unbeaten run against China was going to end. Only a brilliant freekick from Park Chu-young got them back in the game and their third goal (scored in the dying minutes) came from a very hopeful punt. That said, the finish was all class as well.
In addition, had North Korea beaten china by two clear goals in the last match of the tournament, the title would�ve gone north, to Pyongyang (shocking, given NK had to actually qualify for this tournament). However, something went wrong on the day.
