House Bill No. 282, which was introduced this month, says: Any food establishment to which this section applies shall not be allowed to serve food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the State Department of Health after consultation with the Mississippi Council on Obesity Prevention and Management established under Section 41-101-1 or its successor. |

Hell yeah.
I wish they'd do it all over the country!
They should have a set of scales in front of the counter
"If you weigh over this much with your shoes ON, then no burger for you!" |

| The antithesis of a free country: a place where how your body looks and what you eat is controlled by the state. |

"Sorry, ma'am, we can't serve you. You're too fat. Next!"
"Good afternoon, sir. Would you mind stepping on our scale. [loud buzzer sound] Oh I'm sorry, but you're over the limit. Not by much, but rules are rules. Have a nice day and thank you for trying to eat at Burger King."
That's awful. It's illegal, it's unconstitutional. And it does cruel harm to people's self esteem. Telling a person they're too fat to eat in your estabishment, in front of a crowd of strangers like that. You just know someone's gonna snicker.
A better solution would be to make the front doors really, really narrow. |

Well, what would determine obese? That would be subjective would it not? What is legally obese as opposed to just being fat? Would fat people wrongly refused service be able to sue? And obese or not they do need food, you cannot starve them thin, so they would still need to eat in a healthy manner. I could see it if they were ordering five meals or something excessive. That would make them accountable, in a manner similar to serving alcohol. But being able to say, "No, you're to fat to eat" is stupid.
Most seriously obese people don't do their dinning in public so a bill like this would be better aimed at those individuals in their families that act as enablers. The enablers are the ones providing the excessive amounts of food required to make these people obese. Without help, they could not maintain the amount of calories required to keep that kind of weight on. |

| That's just stupid. Really. Still, the obesity problem has to be addressed, and you could start by killing psychologists who tell children it's ok to be 100 pounds overweight if they are ok with it... |

That's stupid, every waiter will be well versed on these regulations? Or will there scales and fat pinchers at the door? PLEASE I have worked in resturants before, half the servers can't even remember to ID people! This bill is asinine! |

I know plenty of construction workers that eat a Whopper meal at Burger King with fries and a large Coke everyday for lunch, drink sodas all the time, and go home and sit in front of the TV all night after work. These guys aren't obese because they burn off so many calories at work.
I also know plenty of office workers that sit at their desk in front of a computer for 60 hours a week burning zero calories and packing on the pounds even though they eat only three meals a day. They come home from work stressed out and too tired to hit the gym. These people usually eat food for pleasure, or munch on snacks at work to break up the monotony.
A better piece of legislation would be to require companies that hire people on salary but expect them to put in 60 hours a week of work at a desk, to provide gym memberships for employees and develop a bonus system to reward employees that use it. |

the person is just going to get angry, then depressed because they're fat.
what do fat people do when they're depressed? they eat.

| So tourists from out of state/country get to starve because they are fat? I'm all for some sort of government initiative on controlling obesity but this one is not going to work. |

A stupid idea that does nothing to address the problem.
Do they really want to stop obese people overeating, or just stop them overeating in public? Are the going to ban fatties from the snack aisles in supermarkets? Will this end up with chunky guys hustling just out of sight of Burger King, getting thin kids to go in and buy their burgers for them?
How will food deliverers determine if the caller is thin enough to deserve their goods.
Ultimately it's going to be overly punitive for restaurants - in effect driving away some potentially, very good customers - while doing nothing but hiding the problem from public view. |

OK, i am from the midwest. there are alot of people are not just fat but morbidly obese.
we need a complete rethinking on what is "food". fast food ten times a week isn't wise but when that's all there is time for...we'd work 10 hr days and not have an hour to spare for lunch. it was constantly busy.
there are soda machines in the schools. chips are everywhere. it is such a calorie rich environment it is crazy. lotsa calories but little nutrition. people get hooked on one thing or another and it takes conscientious effort to break its call. for me mountain dew code red was adictive. me and the handyman at the office we both hooked. we called it "liquid crack". that leaves you chasing a "sugar high" and you are always shoveling in crud. my secretary, a skinny little size 0 would suck down a six pack of dr.peppeer evryday at her desk and constantly be gnawing on ding dongs/ hohos. her metabolism is fine now but give her ten years.
terrible, bad, vicious eating habits. but alot of these people have no health insurance. who pays for they stomach removals, diabetes, etc? we do as the cost of saving them is passed onto everyone else. |
