Toshiba may drop HD-DVD
Looks like the bell is about to toll for HD-DVD.
If only the makers of HD-DVD had given it a cool-sounding name...

Which is quite funny, because everyone -- and I mean everyone -- expected HD-DVD to have a huge advantage due to their name.
It seems to be the logical progression.... you own DVD, so why wouldn't you want to upgrade to HD-DVD, right?
As it turned out, "upscaling" DVD players were sold (even by Toshiba, the maker of HD-DVD) with advertising stating that they would make DVDs upscale to HD quality. "Upscaling" DVD players merely take a normal DVD and scale it to fit the newer/larger LCD and Plasma screens so that the image looks good. That totally confused people, and killed HD-DVD. Everyone bought the $40 HD Upscaling DVD players and assumed they were getting HD. Many people even bought HD-DVD movies assuming they would play in their HD-upscaling DVD player! The discs didn't work, so they returned them. They were confused and some probably felt cheated.
Meanwhile, here was Blu-ray with a totally different name and product. There was no confusion -- it was better than regular DVD, and you knew you didn't own it if you only had a regular or upscaling DVD player.
Even the magazine writers are surprised by how this name issue turned out to be a big advantage for Blu-ray when it was always assumed the opposite would happen. |

The only reason Blu-ray won is because Sony forced it to be bundled with PS3s.
For the majority of its lifetime HD-DVD was superior, which is exactly why the Blu-ray format was revised so it could match up better. This is why 1st gen Blu-ray players won't play new Blu-rays... pretty sad huh |

Sony finally has a successful format ater many years of trying...
But prsonally, giving that kind of power to a company like sony is a litle frightening. They're the same ones who put rootkits on their cds to stop people from copying them. They're the same ones who now want to control the data at every step of transmission. (making your tv part of the DRM chain)
Being a music and film company while also controlling the format to distribute films and being a big player in the consumer elecronics arena is bad news for all consumers.
At least audio seems to be safe. DRM_free music stores are all over the place.
I suggest you download your HD content. |

I concur, support downloading HD content. A lot of major players are going to use this model, Microsoft, Netflix to name a couple. Don't forget OnDemand cable.
Microsoft is talking with Netflix to form a partnership with Xbox Live and Netflix downloads.
Unless Sony can drop the Blu-Ray player to around $100 and the movies under $20, its not going to penetrate the mainstream consumer. Back when the DVD came out, you had no options. It was either VHS or DVD, where DVD was clearly superior. Nowadays, you still have DVD. You have Divx/Xvid players, HD OnDemand, downloadable content, movies delivered straight to your house.
Why go to the store and buy a Bluray disc or rent a Bluray movie when you can sit in your home and download it?
Its very clear that Blu-ray has won the format war. Sony can still blow it though. They could pull some DRM fiasco or something that will alienate consumers. |

A blu-ray burner runs around 400-500 for a computer. The problem with downloading your blu ray movies is that:
A) You need a very fast computer (espiecially for 1080p)
B) A blu-ray movie is about 25gigs (that's a long download). |

for now.
5 years ago I would have thought downloading 2 GB would be crazy. Now do it constantly. |

Yes, and the players themselves along with media will get much cheaper.
The first time I bought a cdr is was $20
I still think DL DVDs are overpriced though. |

When the Blu-ray thing takes off there will be lots of torrent sites sharing Blu-ray files. DL-ing 25gb's would be no problem. I just downloaded a 56GB file this week. Took 3 days. And that was from BTjunkie! A public site.

Totally.
You can get Verbatim x2.4 cheap enough, though. If you don't mind waiting 40 minutes for a burn!!! |

that sucks for the folks who bought one. i read a rumor on some tech blog that the future XBOX 360s might include blu-ray so it can compete with the PS3. |

^ They are saying on various fanboy forums that Christmas 2009 is when the new Xbox 360 replacement will be out.
Not long to go. now. |

You know why they call it the xbox 360? Because when you see it you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away. |
