I'm at the end of a long and difficult year in Masan. I completed my orientation a year ago, began working at my elementary school, and struggled through one of the most difficult years of my life. Why? I stayed because I expected to get 4.2 million won deposited in my bank account on my last payday. I also expected to receive my one way airfare and pension.

I've received word that I'll be getting my pension and airfare. Severance? Severance? Severance? No severance pay. I'm numb at the moment. I don't know what I should do and now wish I'd left six months ago. Any advice??

Public school? Let the finance person know Monday that you're going to the following people that very day if he doesn't honor the contract:

Vice Principal
Principal
School Inspector at the district Office of Education
Supervisor of Foreign Teachers at the South Gyeongsang Provincial Office of Education
Labor Board

This is a streamlined version of what I usually post but in this case, I think these are the only people whose chains you need to rattle. Tell the finance person know you'll happily walk with him to each office concerned until it happens. Be sure to wave the contract in his face every single time you say a word: one word, one wave. No kidding.

Now, the school isn't the outfit that refunds your pension payments; that's the Pension Office. And it's not going to happen anyway if you're not from one of the countries on the list for that.

doesn't the school board send the severance to the individual school before your contract end date?

i've heard one or 2 people say that their public schools will send their severance money to their foreign accounts after the contract...but the school is already in possession of the money, right?

Correct term is "the school had the money." The money's been spent on a night out in room salon.

Well, the school has the money in their budget. Sadly, though, English Language Class is considered to be in the "extra-curricular" department for many schools. (Yes, I know the statement sparkles: "How can it be extra-curricular if the gov't requires it?"). That means that whatever the school is using the extra-curricular funds for, the English funds can very well find their way there.

But, even so, the school is still accountable for honoring the contract stipulations. And the persons I mentioned above are the ones whose chains the OP should be rattling.

Hehe, yep Korea has turned my brain into a sieve, but I can still remember this phone number, if nothing else. It was seared into my brain during my last job, because I called it quite often towards the end of my contract.

And yes, it can be extremely shady over here. So shady it almost blots out all the 'sparkling' that apparently exists here.
