Good post. I'd forgotten about Kosovo while I've been preoccupied with the US election. I'm not sure yet how I feel about this. On the one hand, Putin has a point.

I need to do some reading.

It seems the U.S. has been painted into a corner on this issue. Looks like we'll be supporting (at least diplomatically) another R.O.K.

Bush practically tried to hump Putin's leg a few years ago. But I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I kind of think pissing off Russia in this way is not worth it.

It would have been enough to stop the violence there. Why do they need independence? Autonomy would have been a legitimate face-saver for Russia.

One of my concerns is what will happen a few years down the road...Will they want to join Albania?

Looks like Serbia really won't be handing over that Ratko fella to The Hague any time soon.
I expect to see some truly underhanded *beep* from the Russians over this.

I am strongly against this separation thing. I mean what's next? The separation of the Turks in the Turkish areas of Bulgaria? What about breaking up Macedonia since there are many Albanian areas.? One must be very careful not to promote a Greater Albania which is no better than a Greater Serbia. Milosevic did wrong, but, truth be told, the Albanians also engaged in many cases so much crime, terrorism against Serbians and ethnic cleansed them as well. If France wants to support this, then they should not oppose a Corsican referendum. Certainly, Canadians shouldn't support this. I am all for human rights, but breaking up countries violates international law. I am not a fan of Serbia or Russia... I kind of understand this, but there is a problem with this... Oh well, things happen... I hope things work out all right...... I understand having protected the Albanians there, but separating secession is another thing... This was a secession in my view with all due respect to all the good Albanians out there. I am just worried about the implications of such things..The US doesn't have to worry, states can't break away..

The US, Britain, France and Germany have all recognized Kosovo's independence. It's a done deal.

Am I being cynical when I think the reason is to be able to say to Moslems, "Hey, we supported Kosovo, didn't we?"

If by being cynical you mean 'accurately stating the underlying motivations,' then yes, you are being cynical.

Very Happy

I'm having trouble with the idea that Putin and the Ruskies can fight Chechnya and still be able to buddy up to Iran, but we feel the need to piss off the Russians so the Egyptians will like us. Confused

The Serb minority must be feeling pretty edgy right now. You can bet there are a few ethnic Albanians there who would like to get some payback.

Kosovo is 90% Albanian, and most of them are muslim......
If Russia was to do something militarily to stop this from happening.....you might see a Chechen-style war that won't be pretty, including the introduction of Mujahideen, suicide bombers, car bombers and Jihadi into European proper, which won't go good with the current sentiment in Europe regarding its current relations with the islamic world.
(Training could camps possibly sping up in neighboring Albania along with the conventional ones already set up in Lebanon, Gaza/ West Bank, Syria, Iraq and Iran)- also, the addition of Al-Qaeda gaining sympathy within Albanian society IF its European neighbors refuse to help (which is something the US should strongly think about, but won't~~)

Honestly, if Russia were to intervene on Serbia's behalf, it would have its hands full with the long line on fighters eager and willing to fight them in a bloody guerilla war, since Russia's borders are so open and porous ( especially since alot of its territory is within close proximity to the middle east)- it can become a prime target for logistical sabotage..and there could be disrupting attacks in Chechnya that could spring up at the same time as a conflict with Kosovo...but Europe might even see their muslim population getting frustrated with their governments lack of response or refusal to respond and start conducting terrorist acts because of these frustrations.......

A good example of this is the west's lack of will to interfere in Darfur.....the west is not willing to send peacekeepers (especially the US and European nations) for fear that it would open a new front with Al-Qaeda and its countless muslim allies......

A conflict in Kosovo would become a deadly new ground for unconventional warfare.....which is now the norm in late-20th~early-21st Century military strategy.......
