I've worked in Korea for a number of years and although I've gotten the health insurance booklets from my employers, I haven't used mine for the 3 years I've been teaching in the same place.

My wife is Korean and we have a little baby boy, but she insists the health insurance doesn't cover anything. She says that we've gotten the discounts already, but I'm not quite sure if we've gotten everything, so I just want to double check with some of you here.

If you've had a baby in Korea before, did you flash your health book out and get money back or discounts? Were your wife's checkups covered with you paying minor payments? Were the baby's check ups covered, with you paying minor payments? What wasn't?

I'm just curious, because I'm paying into something every month and yet nothing from checkups to appointments seem to have been covered. Maybe nothing is.

I've gone to the local clinic for cold symptoms and paid 500w for the visit and 5000w for medicine each time.

Another time I paid 6000w to get my Metphormine refilled, myVA perscriptions were late arriving.

I just got my little booklet today and am also really curious about what exactly I'm paying for. Can anyone break it down?

Definately use your health card everytime you see a doctor, especially if it is for your children.

The Korean government is trying very hard to reduce the cost of raising children and many childhood treatments are free or greatly reduced.

Always ask the doctor or nurse what is covered, don't leave it up to you or your wife guessing.

Make sure you tell your employer that you have children and they should be put on your healthcard.

We use the health card for my family every time we visit the doctor here. It usually costs about 2000 won per visit. You can also get several of the immunization shots for your children done for free at the government health clinic in your area.
