OK, I'm getting pretty worried here.
After reading about the guy denied a visa for a car accident, I'm starting to think that ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING will result in rejection.
I have a DUI from my home country, which to me seems to be irrelevant to teaching in Korea. I bet lots of people teaching in Korea have made this stupid mistake in the past.
Some might say it's not the end of the world if you get rejected, go somewhere else.
Great, but I have a nice life in Korea, I've got furniture and all sorts of stuff here. I planned to make this my long term home. I LIKE IT HERE!
Go home! I hear. That is not really a good option. I haven't been to my home country for 5 years, and I never planned to go back to live there. In other words I cut off all ties to the place long ago. I have literally nothing back there, no home, no family, not even a bank account. So, not a good idea. Starting from scratch in England with a few thousand dollars (yes I got used to talking in bucks long ago) is not easy.
So yes, being unable to stay in Korea would be an almighty bucket of turd.
Before anyone else says it, I know I put all my eggs in one basket.
Sorry for the long winded post, I'm just pretty worried right now. Should I be worried or should I just calm down.
P.S. Any tips about China? |

I don't know the answer to your question, but I will not be surprised at the irony of Korea if they do refuse you for ANYTHING related to alcohol. |

I didn't vote because I just don't know. However, it is likely that they will look long and hard at it and then tell you thanks for applying, but no thanks. It seems they are finding ways to keep the standards high regardless of whether or not they truly fit the profile of "criminal." Don't bet the house on it because it doesn't look good. |

Luckily I have a few months left on my visa, but only part-time work.
I may be looking for some cheap accomodation soon, any advice?
I am lucky enough to have a good friend who can store my furniture for me if I have to move out of my apartment. (No, I didn't get fired - long story) |

England (a larger bucket of turd) or Korea (a small sized bucket of turd shipped to your door in almost 10 seconds fast).
Not a good option but Korea is way more better than England. That country is going down the turd-hole. Why don't you order a Korean bride that way you can get an F2-1 Visa and then don't have to go through all this Korean Immigration turd rubbish.
Good luck but Thailand or China could be a better option than England. |

With ya there Wb! Just the thought of having to rent a crappy flat for 600 squid a month and do a soul destroying job at first until something decent turns up makes my teeth itch.
Done Thailand for 2 years before. Loved it, Loved it, Loved it but money's barely above survival level. Thinking China if Korea is not possible.
I should mention that I have parents in France but where they live = zero work, believe me. Anyway, I'm way too old to live with 'em. |

don't know if this will help but it's something
I worked for a public school last year, and got my best mate to fill my position when I left. The school, even back in October, was requesting a police check. Maybe Publics are a head of the curve like with Health checks anyway i digress... he got a police check with a streaming list of DUIs something quite un-imaginable actually... he showed it my boss and my boss was concerned, I looked at it and explained that they're simply traffic violations that IS NOT an issue; moreover when he doesn't drive in Korea.
He still has the Job and his visa, and hopes to stay there for a long while.
but like i said he signed and everything before these new rules "came in".
so i really don't know if his CRC was considered.
Actually worried he won't get a visa for the next years and my old-boss, who was a nice guy, will be left hanging for a new teacher for months because Korean Immigration are being, well... you know... Nazis.
with regards to England being pap... I'm stuck waiting for my police check that'll take up to 40days, to print out something off a computer. CRY T,T |

i dunno. but then nobody does. how about extending now, in the non-record check days and get a release from this school later or cut a deal? that'll get you another year, yes?
we can only guess what the specs will be in 13 months. |

I don't consider a DUI a 'mistake'. It's a complete lack of proper judgement where you put yourself & others at risk because many are too cheap to pony up the tab to get a cab.
Not only are you playing russian roulette with your own life, you're risking others around you. Not exactly 'cool' when you hit someone, but hey, it's 'ok' if noone gets hurt right?
Well you got caught, charged & convicted. IMHO you have no business whining about not being able to get a job because of a DUI. You took the risk, now you can pay for it.
Zero sympathy.

Oh, get off your high horse, god almighty.
WoBW,
You could be screwed. If there's nothing you can do about it, don't worry about it. Just be prepared to move somewhere else. Life's too short to worry about things that are out of your hands. Maybe you could look into having that expunged from your record in the meantime. Somehow? I think you said that it was only 5 years ago though. I don't know.
Look at your options. What can you do somewhere else? Save as much money as you can and be ready to pounce on another opportunity in another land. Anyways, who knows? Maybe they'll get rid of all of us in a few years time. Think about that. Have to always be ready to do something else. Daily life here, however easy it may be, can be taken away from you at a moment's glance. I don't blame you for not wanting to go back to England.
You know, you don't have to teach. You could take up a trade. Move to Canada or the States. Anything. |

I completely agree with TheChickenLover. This has nothing to do with being on a high horse. There's a thing called righteous indignation. There was harm, there was a foul, even if his DUI didn't result in an accident or fatality.
Laws elsewhere have a 5 or 7 year statute that erases (I think) a DUI or lets you get back your driver's license after some time. People can still have an opinion about it
To cut to the quick: you should probably be worried about not being allowed to work in Korea. |

You people sound worse than the " teaching on the side is a terrible crime", anal retentive camp.
The question is--would a DUI affect the status of a public school teacher back home? Would he or she get a license, or would their license be renewed?
Yes it does have something to do with "being on a high horse".
What a dumb expression "Buy the Way". |

Are they really denying teachers for that kind of garbage.
I mean I been a car accident and have had a DUI charge against me when i was younger .Both are not related to each other either. I'm not sure if they are still on my record. I'll still haven;t gotten my CRC back yet.
My DUI was only a 24 hours suspension and my traffic accident was cause due to icy road conditions.
Why would Korea deny E2 visas based on these kind of charges? Are they really criminal offenses? |

Come off it. The DUI statutes currently enforced almost everywhere have absolutely zero relation to the driver's impairment or lack thereof. In point of fact, most people are not impaired at the utterly arbitrary and unreasonably low statutory BAC limit of .08. Add to that the inaccuracy of breath analysis for determining BAC, and you have a recipe for disaster for people who have done nothing wrong.
If a driver is demonstrably impaired, by all means throw the book at 'im. But ruining people's lives based on a completely unreasonable and utterly arbitrary statutory figure measured by an inherently inaccurate system is beyond ridiculous.
