To keep this in the travel forum without getting this qualified for the international board, I thought that I would go about getting your perspectives on travel/working/studying there.

Can anyone recommend some good schools or relay their experiences in reference to teaching positions?

Best place to study Spanish while working?

Any pitfalls? Crime, dishonest managers, etc.?

Living tips?

I'm thinking about doing a short stint there this fall. I've seen jobs paying as high as a grand per month.

I travelled through Mexico about 5 years ago & would also be interested in getting info about working & living there.

Just from a travellers perspective it was fabulous!
The food was delicious without exception, the people were some of the friendliest I have met in my travels & the countryside itself was gorgeous. The beaches were pretty, they have great diving & lots of great canyons to explore. Of course all the aztec/mayan ruins & sense of history is fascinating too.

Would definitely welcome the chance to return & work there a while.

I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to study in Mexico. I lived in Mazatlan and went to Technologico de Monterrey university. They offer classes in English, in addition to Spanish classes at different levels. I learned so much Spanish in the classes, but I think this was due to a great teacher!
I don't recommend Mazatlan, unless you want to relive spring break every week of your life. I would recommend Guanajuato (it was my favourite place by far!), and a visit to the Yucatan peninsula (Merida, Cancun, etc.), the charming Mexico City and even Guadalajara.
There are many campuses of Technologico de Monterrey around Mexico, but not sure just how many offer classes in English.
No matter where you end up, it's impossible to have a bad time in Mexico!

Hey man! I lived and worked in Guadalajara for 2 years. It is the 2nd biggest city in Mexico, home of the Mirachi dancers, musicans. Great big, small city(?). Takes a bit of time to get used to the traffic. Bicycle riding
can be an expierence! Women are georgeous. Not a main stream tourist town, but you will see a few in the downtown area. Always something happening in this city.

Suggest you look through the yellow pages and then start hitting door to door to look for a job. Best you can expect is about $7.00 US an hour. Your job maybe hour per hour, which means split shift (morning, siesta, return for PM). This is the norm.

Rent and accomodations can be scarce and scary. Your best bet is to inquire after you get a job if any other teachers are sharing a house and get a room. That can go for $150 to $200 a month.

Have fun and drink the Mexican beer!

hey guys i am from mexico , and i want to put in my 2 cents here. I would most definitly do Guanajuato, or San Miguel, i think these 2 citys are some of the most beautiful citys in the world. If you want to be by a beach you should bypass Cancun (too expensive) and check out Playa del Carmen. I still haven't been there but family and freinds tell me its much cheeper prettier than Cancun and doesnt' have too many tourist.
Word of advice, stay away from the border citys, that is Juarez, Reynosa, Laredo, Matamoros, they aren't much to look and can be pretty dangerouse.
