The right-to-carry lobby has a strong pull on politicians, so the gun laws are generally weak. In these 4 cases, it will probably turn out that 2 of the 4 shooters legally owned the guns they used (the 2 kid shooters probably didn't legally own their guns).

Mental Illness is extremely unchecked in the US. Thank Reagan for that. So, tragedies like this are more and more common. There are no psychological exam requirements for gun owners, although in many states a crazy person can be banned from owning a gun. But as we've seen in other cases, that doesn't stop people.

From the MSNBC article
Quote:
The Chicago Sun-Times reported at the time that an unknown person posted the graffiti in the Grant Towers D complex residence hall. It included a racial slur and the notation, What time? The VA tech shooters messed up w/ having only one shooter.

You can't blame Reagan. The Carter Admin released all the nuts that
were being held against their will (committed) . Many VA hospitals were
emptied.

It has been much more difficult to get people committed since then
Reagan did nothing to change that.

Actually, in 1980, Reagan nullified the Mental Health Services act and cut spending on mental health hospitals.
While governor of California, he cut funding to mental health treatment which began the mass releasing of psychiatric patients.

Though Reagan himself is not to blame for this shooting, but if he had enforced rather than ignored the services act, then perhaps others would have received treatments.

Reagan was elected in 1980. He was inaugurated in 1981. I'm not a fan of his, but your facts are off somewhere.

Also, this guy was a UofI Champaign student, where I went for four years. Kind of creepy.

The cause of campus craziness is Mountain Dew.

A few decades ago, students didn't blow away their schoolmates.
Now they do.

A few decades ago, Mountain Dew was not popular.
Now it is.

The campus shooter was found to be high on Mountain Dew.
There was a supply of Mountain Dew containers found in the hotel room he was staying in.

There were plenty of guns decades ago, but no campus shootings.
Mountain Dew is the problem, not guns.

Doin' the Dew: A History

Weve all filled our gullets with the ubiquitous elixir known as Mountain Dew at some point. But does anyone really know anything about the trademark drink of our generation? Why it tastes the way it does, why its so damned addictive, where it came from? The answers are actually pretty surprising; as it turns out, Dew isnt just our generations drink; its origin dates all the way back to the 1940s, and it didnt start out as anything close to the Dew we all know and love today. It took 20 years to evolve into the carbonated joy that is the modern Dew, and it took 30 more years to truly break into the mainstream and become the energy supply of choice for sleep-deprived teens everywhere.

Mountain Dew actually surfaced in Virginia in the early 40s as a lithiated-lemon mixer used with hard liquor in bars; similar to 7-Up. The concoction was originally created by two brothers, Ally and Barney Hartman, who jokingly named the drink Mountain Dew after Tennessee Mountain Moonshine, a popular product in the hills of Virginia at the time- the mixer was at one time even billed as zero proof hillbilly moonshine. The moonshine theme didnt stick, but the hillbilly did, and when Mountain Dew was trademarked and labeled, it included a cartoon hillbilly taken from the creators original label design, who would eventually grow to become the drinks official mascot for years to come. Later named GranPappy, he soon became a popular icon in bars, and appeared on several Mountain Dew products and merchandise, lasting for several more decades.

In the 1950s the Tip Corporation, the owners of the Mountain Dew brand, distributed the drink all over the Eastern Seaboard. Several bottlers manufactured and distributed Dew, in two different sizes costing 5 and 15 cents respectively, complete with the then-famous label featuring GranPappy the Hillbilly shooting at a man running out of an outhouse.

Drowning despite Dews strong sales, Tip approached Pepsi-Cola in the early 1960s to sell the Mountain Dew brand. However, the product was in direct competition with Pepsis own lemon-flavored drink- Teem. So, the owners went back to the drawing board- they reduced the amount of carbonation and added more sugar and caffeine, as well as mixing in enough orange juice to remove it from the lemon-lime soda category. Thus, Mountain Dew as we know it was born, and Pepsi bought Dews new brew on September 2nd, 1964.

Mountain Dew quickly became Pepsis second best-selling drink (next to Pepsi itself), and a new advertising campaign featured Willy GranPappy Hillbilly, along with all his yokel kin, encouraging Dew drinkers to Yahooooo- Drink Mountain Dew! Itll tickle yer innards! By the early 70s, however, it was clear that Willy the Hillbilly had run out of steam, so Mountain Dews image was again redesigned, this time appealing to the young outdoors-type. The bottles were changed yet again to reflect this new attitude; and the public got their first glimpse at the now-famous wavy logo, which would grace bottles of Mountain Dew to decades to come.

Throughout the 70s and 80s Mountain Dew enjoyed moderate success, as one of Pepsis top-grossing sodas. A Diet Dew was released in 1988; but that was nothing compared to the Dew Revolution of 1990s. It started in 1993, when Pepsi first unveiled its new tagline for Mountain Dew: Do the Dew. Commercials were produced featuring the Dew Dudes, including the award-winning Been There, Done That. Soon after, Mountain Dew was poised to take its place in a new generation by sponsoring the first-ever X-Games in 1995. A new breed of Dew lovers was born, and the rest of the 90s is Mountain Dew history, as the youth culture embraced the addictive yellow-green potion.

In 2001, the first-ever Mountain Dew spin-off burst onto the scene- Mountain Dew Code: Red. Combining classic Dew with a rush of cherry flavor, it quickly became a hot-seller in cold cases across America, alongside its older brother. Amp, a Dew-based energy drink, soon followed, and a year later Diet Code: Red was released. The summer of 2003 saw the arrival of the legendary Mountain Dew LiveWire- an orange-twisted Dew variant. It was a hit in its first limited summer release, and returned the next year- along with Mountain Dew: Baja Blast, a lime-flavored Dew available only at Taco Bell; and Pitch Black, a Halloween-themed Dew, dark purple and grape-flavored, which also saw a short lifespan.

Today, Mountain Dew is at the height of its popularity, enjoying its status as the ultimate liquid of choice for teens and the #1 source of caffeine for college students the world over.

As a staple of todays youth culture and a mainstay in the stomachs of people across the globe, Mountain Dew remains the king of the carbonated soft-drinks.

School shootings

The Bath School disaster is the name given to three bombings in Bath Township, Michigan, USA, on May 18, 1927, which killed 45 people and injured 58. Most of the victims were children in the second to sixth grades (7-12 years of age) attending the Bath Consolidated School. Their deaths constitute the deadliest act of mass murder in a school in U.S. history.

So what do you attribute the above incidents to, ultra? Hint: It's NOT Mountain Dew. And why aren't there similar murder rates in other western countries, like Canada & Australia, which also have Mountain Dew? Your thesis is seriously flawed. jkelly80 said it more succinctly, than me.

The above list names various violent events from various countries and various weapons.
The above list does not pertain to the topic at hand which is:
The recent rise of gun violence on campus in one country.
If one wished to debate the above list, one couldn't, as the above list does not relate to the topic at hand.

Tobacco was once considered to be beneficial for health.
Various drugs have been used to promote health, later to found deadly.
Thalidomide. Mercury. Two examples out of many.
Numerous prescription drugs have been found to do more harm than good and have killed numerous people before being discontinued.
Ingredients and additives in food products, cosmetics, and manufacturing processes have been proven to be deadly and subsequently outlawed.

Death by food ingredients is a significant cause of death and various forms of disease.
In many cases, harmful food ingredients have been identified and discontinued by law.
There is so much information about this. Because you are unwilling or unable to be aware of it doesn't entitle you to disparage someone for writing about it.

A couple of things:
I am not in the debate mode.
I am not disparaging anyone for expressing their views.
In my opinion, the proposal to ban guns in USA is a wild fantasy, but I don't disparage those who make that proposal.

If you wanna know what exemplifies bad taste, its:
1. People who disparage those with who they disagree
2. Mountain Dew

Mountain Dew is a soda or soft drink and as such will rob you of your precious B complex of vitamins (essential for healthy neural functioning, immune and digestive functioning), also it will rob you of potassium (essential for carrying oxygen to the brain) and calcium (essential for neural and bone healthand digestive health)................ It's totally astounding the damage that the combination of sugar and various chemicals combined to create a delicious yet toxic drink can do to our bodies.
The side affects you are having such as insomnia and dizzy spells, headaches and migraines are all symptoms of B complex vitamin deficiency, particularly B12 ...... other symptoms you may be suffering from are inability to concentrate, loss of balance, irritability and moodiness, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and exhaustion, excessive sweating, depression, constipation and even chest pains and heart palpitations!!
Quite scary actually if you don't realise the vitamin factor.

Answer
Hi,

You really need to start cutting back on how much Mountain Dew you drink. Are you drinking regular or diet Mountain Dew? If you are drinking regular Mountain Dew, not only are you getting way too much caffeine every day, but also too much sugar. This is very unhealthy and could lead to tooth decay, weight gain, and diabetes.

By any chance, do you know if you have attention deficit disorder (ADD)? Some people with ADD find that drinking Mountain Dew helps them due to the caffeine content and, therefore, end up drinking quite a bit of it. Regardless, you are still drinking too much Mountain Dew. My recommendation to you would be to try to decrease the amount you drink gradually. See you if you can get yourself to decrease your intake by one or two for a few days and keep going from there. I think it would also be beneficial for you to talk to a doctor about this.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

First, insult, then insult plus bullying.

What's next, how about setting up a webcam and dropping your pants to reveal Sponge Bob Square Pants underwear.

That would enhance your credibility.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brominated_vegetable_oil

Brominated vegetable oil

Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is vegetable oil that has had atoms of the element bromine bonded to it. Brominated vegetable oil is used as an emulsifier in citrus-flavored soft drinks such as Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Powerade, Mello Yello, Pineapple and Orange Fanta, Sun Drop, Squirt and Fresca to help natural fat-soluble citrus flavors stay suspended in the drink and to produce a cloudy appearance.

The addition of bromine increases the density of the oil, and the amount of bromine is carefully controlled to achieve a density that is the same as the water in the drink. As a result, the BVO remains suspended in the water instead of forming separate layers.

Health effects
Long after consumption of BVO in test animals, traces remain in the body fat.[citation needed] Bromine is a halogen and displaces iodine, which may depress thyroid function. Evidence for this has been extrapolated from pre-1975 cases where bromine-containing sedatives resulted in emergency room visits[1] and incorrect diagnoses of psychosis and brain damage due to side effects such as depression, memory loss, hallucinations, violent tendencies, seizures, cerebral atrophy, acute irritability, tremors, ataxia, confusion, loss of peripheral vision, slurred speech, stupor, tendon reflex changes, photophobia due to enlarged pupils, and extensor plantar responses.[2]

In one case, a man who drank eight liters of Ruby Red Squirt daily had a reaction that caused his skin color to turn red and produced lesions diagnosed as bromoderma. The excessive quantities together with the fact that the man had a higher than normal sensitivity to bromine, made this an unusual case.[3]

A similar case reported that a man who consumed two to four liters of a cola containing BVO on a daily basis experienced memory loss, tremors, fatigue, loss of muscle coordination, headache, ptosis of the right eyelid as well as elevated serum chloride.[4] In the two months it took to correctly diagnose the problem the patient also lost the ability to walk. Luckily bromism was finally diagnosed and hemodialysis was prescribed which resulted in a reversal of the disorder.[1]

In test animals, BVO consumption has caused damage to the heart and kidneys in addition to increasing fat deposits in these organs. In extreme cases BVO has caused testicular damage, stunted growth and produced lethargy and fatigue.

Standards for soft drinks in India prohibit the use of BVO
