I'm helping a hagwon select curricula to help prep the kids for 2010, when High School English will be taught in English only supposedly. Also, there is rumor that many schools will be mandated to teach math and science in English as well. Nobody's really sure to what extent President E's rhetoric will be actualized, but acting on the assumption that at least some of what he aims for will come to pass, the director here has decided to mix in some American elementary-level science and math texts with their basic ESL stuff.

Interesting idea, no? Anyway, I'm chopping through a huge box of Harcourt/ Brace standards, and trying to pick what levels will be most appropriate.

Anyone else done this yet?

The big choice for me is this: should we try to teach them the same subject matter they are currently learning in their public school math/ science/ social studies classes, or teach them (in English) the stuff they learned last year?
I can think of advantages for either strategy but would be very grateful to hear your opinions on this issue.

I heard that the president is going to scrap this idea. Mainly because Korean schools will not be ready in time.

I would teach what they are learning in Korean class now. The context would help them to make connections.

Look at the Harcourt Curriculum.

It has graded science, social studies, and Reading comprehension.

Biggest advantage is that these are real textbooks used in the USA.

Biggest downfall is the social studies are disgustingly based upon the USA

***
Someone needs to write an English Social studies textbook based upon Korean Society and Geography.
