i'm walking near strathcona elementary in vancouver, which is about 2 blocks from mentally ill crack-addled dude neighborhood extraordinaire.

across from the school is this really old church which has become the korean gospel center.

some service has just finished, and people are filing out.

i end up walking behind this girl for about a 1/2 block and it was clear from her body language that she was convinced she's going to get her purse snatched by a local denizen.

so i break out my rudimentary (that's pronounced 'crappy') korean

"여기 는 한국말 교희 있읍니까?"

she turns around with a look on her face like she'd just seen park chung hee's ghost wearing a dress and says "uh... um... 예"

my intention was to set her at ease but i think it freaked her out even more that some big pink dude with an untidy beard was speaking korean to her in the worst neighborhood in canada.

If you wanted to scare her, you could have asked her if you could be her basketball coach.

I thought maybe you'd thrown a dog at her.

Cute story, newbie. Maybe good for a quip at a pub, but no need to start a thread for it.

PRagic the DESL standards police. I have to say, buddy, you're doing a pretty poor job.

On topic:

I too surprised some Korean tourists in Germany. Although the situation was not similar at all, the look on their faces when confronted with a pink korean speaker was priceless! It really must have warmed their hearts. Korean's truly becoming a bit of a global language!

And why? Is it because of Koreans going abroad? Maybe... but these anecdotes suggest that this may just be a direct result of the EFL industry in Korea.

I just calls em like I sees em. Come on. Really. What is the purpose of the thread?

"I speak a little Korean and FREAKED A KOREAN OUT WITH IT!'

Nothing to see here...move along...back to your homes....

When I was in Vietnam, I struck up a conversation with some Korean guys. All three of them just stared at me for a minute and then one said, "한국 시람이에요?" He said it with the same awe they use for "Can you really eat spicy food?"

Now I see where this is going. Fine. So Koreans are surprised when a foreigner can speak Korean. I guess the problem was the name of the thread.

Either way...yawn.

shall i walk you through it?

this is the off-topic forum. scan the other thread titles, and you'll see that this is the place where we share cute, funny, interesting non-teaching-related stories about our life, rants, or other stuff that wastes time and bandwidth.

a few examples:

Koreans in....New Brunswick?

New Blog: Stuff White People Like

Best ring tone: MJ's 'Thriller'

Koreans Rush to Guam and Saipan for US Citizenship Babies!

WORD CHAIN 2008!

The Comprehensive Comic Discussion Thread

really earth-shaking stuff, eh? good thing everyone's tuning in so regularly.

and spliff - cut and paste 5 or 10 of your posts and tell me whether or not they're worth anyone's time. i'll answer that - they're not. you may as well have a canoe or a dead sheep in your apartment instead of a computer.

a couple people chuckled because of an anecdote i shared. that was my aim.

and yeah i spelled church wrong. sorry.

and while being a newbie is nothing to be ashamed of, and arguing about "who's been here longer", post counts and other chest-thumping douchebaggery is totally lame.. did you notice this:
