That's what I like to hear. There's a little geek in everyone.
First, go here and download SP2 on the good computer, copy it and run it on the other computer.

Then, go to this page and try a few of the things suggested.

Then, if that doesn't work, try googling related terms.

Okay...the inner geek has arrived, well nearly!!!

I tried to download...I clicked icon, but it says that I already have SP2 installed (obviously, I am using another laptop).

How do I download it to a USB and transfer this to the old laptop?

The inner geek is assuming control!!!

Okay story so far...
Installed SP2...brilliant.
Hooked up Internet cable.
Problems begin:

1)Computer said 'Limited or no connectivity'
2)The network did not assign a network address to the computer.
3) I press Repair
4) Renewing IP address
5) Windows could not finish the repair...

The inner geek is now confused.
The internet works on the other computer so the problem must be with mine.
The website (DANI) does not mention any thing that relates to my problem, that I can see.

Any advice?????

Again. hmmmm

I think I installed this already, but maybe I didn't... Go to http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/index.php?i=7400730000&ppn=PB42B01101 and download and install the network controller driver. Let's see what that does.

Too bad I switched over to the Mac. I used to be decent with connectivity issues on Windows.
I'll try to post up some stuff for you to try tonight when I get back home to my dinosaur of a laptop. I still have my old troubleshooting links and faqs someplace. Tho, I doubt I have anything for those Packard *ells.... Smile

Okay,

That was quick...I downloaded and installed new driver....

Still say exactly the same:
1)Computer said 'Limited or no connectivity'
2)The network did not assign a network address to the computer.
3) I press Repair
4) Renewing IP address
5) Windows could not finish the repair...

Very strange indeed...the connection is fine as I am using it now on different laptop.

I'll check again after work

Cheers guys
Note....I can't believe I am getting interested in computers!!!!!

Go to the control panel and find "device manager" through the "system" icon. Expand the "network adapter" "+" sign and then remove the device(s) by right clicking and choose "remove hardware" or some such thing.

It will ask you to reboot, I think. If not, reboot. It should find the right drivers for the "found new hardware" that will come up after rebooting. If not, extract the files you donloaded (presuming it is a .zip file) or if it is an .exe file, get the free program "7zip", which will extract .exe files.

Direct Windows to the folder where the extracted files are and let it install them.

Some more background would be nice. I guess you and the_beaver are in the know, but some more details would be good for a round table discussion.

Demophobe,

I know nearly zero about computers....basically the_beaver knows what's going on....new installation of XP Professional with SP2 on a brand new 120GB hard drive.

There is nothing else on the computer....exact Mozilla Firefox.

I will try what you said when I get back from work.

Cheers

If it is a notebook and you installed XP over the original OS, it is no surprise that you are having troubles. I mean, not long ago, installing a vanilla OS over the factory install meant bricking your laptop.

Anyhow, it's good to have the_beaver on the case. If there is any way I can help, PM me.
