Given what range of possibilites? What we see around us in other regions and nations? Our closest models are the Canadian, Mexican, and Cuban ones. And according to WHO -- where Canada barely ranks "better" than us and Mexico and Cuba rank "worse" -- there are 153 nations with healthcare systems that rank "worse" than America's. |
Right now we have Medicaid and Medicare, which are going to consume ever more of our GDP. But we're not getting financial support from the youth, who would pay more into the system than receive.
Our split public-private system is a disaster. |

Socialized medicine? I dunno. How about France's model system? (not socialized)
Does anyone have any criticisms of the McCain tax credits proposal? The above article says the American system costs $6,100 per person, so are the McCain credits sufficient? |

I know more than one middle-class retired person, living on a pension with benefits, who would disagree. In any case, reform is always appropriate. But denouncing the entire system as "a disaster" seems a bit hyperbolic.
I can already see how some might respond: leftists have long dehumanized the middle and above classes. Only the working-classes count as human beings and if any given system does not privilege working-class interests, then the entire system must be judged immoral and evil. I will not respond to such a position. |

The American system is quite poor, given the extremely high financial cost for the low (by global standards) outcomes.
I concur with Kuros. The French system is likely the best in the world. |

Concur all you like. I stand in a position that more or less represents the American mainstream. And I doubt we will embrace a Socialized political economy anytime soon.
Keep dreaming (and reeling about our sound rejection of Ron Paul), though. |

Wait, one the one hand I endorse a kind of socialist health care and on the other hand am "reeling" from the demise of arch-capitalist Ron Paul? Isn't that strange...
Lots of ideas are both mainstream and wrong at the same time. The American system is more expensive than any other in the world, yet has outcomes worse than about 30 other states.
There are very solid economic reasons for this as well. |

Here's some authority to back up thepeel's assertion.
Just to note, I'm opposed to continuing Social Security and suspicious of big government. I'm center-right economically, but socialized medicine, with a private alternative market available, just makes sense. |

I'd let people over 50 continue to have their handouts. Everyone else would get tax-free investment accounts.
I mean, c'mon, even you have to admit that the way SS is done is stupid.
They actually tax you your Social Security benefits. WHY? |
