Well, I'm looking into public schools for my next contract. Sounds like less hours and more real teaching.

However, there is a problem with this. My contract ends in June, public schools start in September: if I were to work at a public school, then I'd have to go back to Canada for a few months inbetween contracts. I can't afford to do this because I need to be paying student loans on a consistent basis, so I was actually wondering if it were possible to just have my contract extended at my hagwon (Visa extension for three months).

I'm not sure whether I can do this with the new Visa regulations, so if I can't, what else could I do?

If I have to work at another hagwon again, I want to find a good one. The only problem I have with my hagwon now is the complete lack of discipline and the fact that almost half my classes are screaming matches where I'm trying to seat the kids and they refuse to sit down / be quiet. Is it possible to find a hagwon with good, solid discipline, or, as a better alternative, do hagwons exist that only teach middle-school and older students?

I discovered my specialty here and it is teaching Middle School. I'm so much more comfortable teaching kids in that age category than I would be elementary or High School (though I'd much rather High School than elementary).

Anyway, thoughts?

There are vacant positions all year round, despite what the smoe / gepik / epik websites may state. Either apply directly, or through a reputable recruiter, preferably the ones contracted to the big 3 listed.

No reason why you couldn't start in July, & do summer camps in August at a Public School.

You could, um, save money to pay those loans. You could also possibly overpay for the next couple of months. My next student loan payment isn't due until January 2011.

There are other reasons too. If I go home for three months I will be bored off my ass. Especially considering all my friends/girlfriend are here.

If you're hired for a September start, you will actually need to be available the last week of August for training.

If your contract is up in June, you could easily work a couple of summer camp jobs in between contracts. There are always summer camp positions being advertised for in July and August. Work a couple of camps for money, then you'll be good to go for August training for a public school position.

I went home for two months between contracts, and it was a much needed break. I had a completely fresh start before I began my public school position.

You could always start saving now, take one month to work a summer camp, and then take your girl on vacation to Thailand or somewhere tropical for a couple of weeks, then start your new job. Either way, a break between contracts to refresh yourself is a good idea.

This is strange, I've been told numerous times that public schools only hire in September and January and there was no alternatives to this... now I find out they hire all year round. Awesome. I suppose people quit, etc etc and they need to fill their spot.

i know people hired in february, march, and april.

i honestly don't even think it's because people are leaving their jobs, i think they can't manage to fill all the public school jobs they have. positions in popular areas probably go first though, so you may not have a lot of choice in june or july

I want to live in the same region I live in now (Ggyeongi-do: Anyang, Uiwang, Gunpo, Gwacheon, Bundang, Suwon, Southern Seoul, et cetera are all fine).

I definitely don't want to live in the country.
