I was under the impression for the last year that schools paid up to 600,000 won, and have been told this by my co-teacher. How much does your school pay? |

I was present at the negotiations with my public school and the realtor.
My korean is very poor so I may have misheard, but the figure I heard being thrown around was W550,000. Have no idea about the amount of key money. |

Wow! Some high numbers from schools. Why is the stipend in lieu of provided housing so low, then? |

Where I'm at, my school pays 550,000 / month for a 8 pyeong 1 room.
If I were to find my own housing, the stipend would only be 300,000 / month. |

Yeah, exactly. I wonder why they are so cheap about the stipend? |

My school pays 600,000 but they won't put down any key money. My SMOE contract states that I would get 500,000 if I took the money. I wanted to move and they insisted that they pay directly for my housing instead of giving me the money (which seems strange as they would have to give me less money....) But I had to put down all the key money. |

you wanna know my, slightly paranoid, theory?
because they want you to take the provided housing so that they know exactly where you live and possibly have a key to your place. it's all about control, baby!
anyways, just my two cents, feel free to contradict me if anyone has got something better (and less paranoid) |

yeah, it's totally about the control issue - no doubt whatsoever... |

Mine costs them 900 a month, with a 10% discount from the landlord (originally 1m). It's not fancy, just in maybe the most expensive part of town. I'm more than happy with that cos I wouldn't get anything in this area with the 500 offered. |

It's a studio apartment near Gangnam station. I don't work for Gangnam-gu though. I work for SMOE.
I've no idea about square footage or pyong. It has a small bathroom, kitchenette, sofa, and double bed. Also a veranda. |

This really depends on a lot of factors.
I have no idea what the actual budgets are at all but it seems to vary a lot depending on which city you are in.
Officetels are really overpriced also imo.
Anyways....city hall here usually does there's on a yearly downpayment system without monthly rent. There budget was originally 35 million and that's what they put down on my current place...which is a half decent but really not great officetel about 14 pyeong in size.
For the newer teachers they are giving a using a budget of 50 million tho. These teachers are living in new officetels or in mini two room buildings which are more comfortable.
Myself and my school have been pestering city hall to allow me to move and I'm finally about to do so. I think I've gotten a pretty good deal. They've pledged 10 million in key money and 400,000 a month.
I looked at some 18 pyeong officetels that were very new. They were going for 10 million down and 550,000 a month so I would've had to make up the difference.
Housing in this area is known to be some of the most expensive in Gyeonggi Do.
I got a two bedroom/kitchen/bathroom place on the 1st floor of a house 5 minutes from my school for the amount of my budget. I'm happy. |
