ive been here 2 years on an e-2 visa and got a new job too last minute to get my visa extended here in Korea, so Im going back to America to do it quickly. Do you need a visa issuance number to get it done, or can you just show up at the consulate with the required documents and get it processed that day? Will be done in Atlanta. thanks.

You definitely can't just show up at the consulate and get it processed that day.

Especially considering that some of the documents will need to be provided by your employer (copy of business license, etc.), the application for visa issuance should be submitted to Immigration in Korea by your employer. If all the documents are in order, an issuance number should be granted in 5-10 working days. With the issuance number, you can apply for your visa at the consulate and receive it in 1 or 2 daysassuming, of course, that they don't require you to interview. Chicago is making everyone interview regardless of previous E-2 status, but I haven't heard anything about Atlanta's practice one way or the other.

Good luck!

If you have all the documents here, you ought to go down to Immigration this week and 1) change your workplace; 2) extend your sojourn. You can do it in one visitprocessed while you waitand avoid the hassles of a new visa (including background check, re-registering for your ARC, etc.).

This would be WAY faster than submitting paperwork for a new visa and waiting for an issuance number. In addition, depending on where you live in the U.S., the Korean consulate in charge of your area might require you to appear in person for an interview, with 1-2 week waiting lists for interview appointments in some cases.

If there's any way you can extend your current visa, I highly advise going that route.

it takes 2 weeks to change place of employment on an e-2 visa here in korea, sucks as you can do an extension same day. apparently public school jobs are a little easier to slip by immigration, we'll see.

Not sure where you heard the 2 weeks figure. Several people who have posted their experiences here stated that their change of workplace and extension were processed the same day while they waited. One example: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?p=1530980#1530980
