Does anyone here know of YangPyeong, about 50 minutes by train from Seoul?
I lived there in 1999, my first time in Korea. These days I feel quite nostelgic about the place. It's the best of both worlds really, a nice quiet little town with lovely countryside, great hills for hiking and biking and great riverside scenery, but still not far from Seoul at all.
For anyone facing the big city vs small town dilemma, I'd recommend towns like Yangpyeong, where you really enjoy the quiet charms of the Korean outdoors but not be far from the big city when you need it.

Yeah Duncan, I know Yangppyeong well. Often our team ride will hit the big hills there. It's really nice, and some of the roads look like they are straight out of a European stage race. I don't know about the mountain bike riding, but if it's anything like the road riding, then it's great. |

Is that road biking with an expat group or Korean group? I met a friendly Aussie called 'sarge' who used to ride out there a lot.
Ironically, though I am much more into mountain biking than road riding now, when I lived in YangPyeong 95% of my riding was on the road, due to a combination of having not mountain biking skills at the time and having no one to ride with.
The route I used to like was to go up one the main roads behind Yangpyeong, head over a couple of big saddles then come back via the roads along the north Han river and Yangsuri. |

I live there now and agree with you. I live in the main town Yangpyeong-eup and take a bus to work in a tiny village about 20 minutes away. My school only has 80 pupils so I see them all every day. In town there are about 12 foreign teachers so it never gets too lonely, and Seoul is easy to reach for stocking up on books and foreign foods. I'm very happy! |

I'm new to the area myself and, though I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone, I love it so far and find it quite beautiful. I can actually see the stars at night, something I rarely remember happening last year. |
