| I'm looking for a mid-range point and shoot. I checked out Home Plus and decided, of the limited selection there, I liked the Canon Ixus-70. I've been looking for reviews on the internet but so far haven't found anything really credible. I like the Ixus-70 (you know the one with the hot tennis pro in the ad) because the shutter speed is super fast. It also has a high ISO function so you can take action shots. Does anyone own this camera or have any suggestions for another? It's on sale this week for 238 000 at Lotte Mart. Maybe it's cheaper at Yongsan. |

you have to be really careful when you buy at yongsan. there are a lot of swindlers there. Some will charge you extra for the battery, power adaptor, or case that should be in the original packaging. + you would have to pay foreigner tax.
the best and cheapest way is to buy online. check at Danawa first. then have a korean friend help you order online at one of the shops listed.
for a better review of all the cameras go to Dpreview.com.
Canon compacts are well known for good photo quality and build. |

| I agree, Canon's are great. I have an ancient 3.2 MP A70 Powershot...and I still get compliments on how nice the pictures come out. |

Or better yet, check online, find what you like, print out the cheapest prices for each model, walk around and get a better deal at Yongsan. Foreigner tax is only for suckers and impulse buyers. |

actually most places won't give you a better deal especially if you mention internet prices. they get really annoyed if you do this.

Try the Canon Plaza in Hyehwa. I think I remember seeing some point and clicks there among the pricey DSLRs.

LOL so true! I just say, "ok, buddy" and walk away. I won't even go to brick and mortar places anymore. They can't or won't compete.
Learn to use Gmarket and/or Danawa. You'll never look back. Haggling? What's haggling?  I love the internet too much.  |

Agreed.
Korean electronics salesmen/shop-owners are useless. I ONLY use the internet now for electronics. Cheaper and much less hassle.
Anyone who has been to Hong Kong will tell you how electronics shopping should be done. Huge selection of everything. Prices on everything. Yongsan is terrible on both those counts. If you walk into a store which doesn't have a price on anything......then you can sure the salesman will be trying to rip you off. |

Careful of high ISO features on anything below DSLR. They'll most likely be worthless. You need a large sensor to get good results there, and compact cameras just don't have them.
That said, I know for high zoom cameras fujifilm generally has the best ISO performance. I just got their 18x zoom actually, but haven't had a chance to do a lot of shooting with it yet.
If you're looking for the simple point and shoot but want decent quality almost the entire powershot series gets good reviews so those are a pretty safe bet. So many options it's ridiculous though. Hard to sort out and recommend without putting in a lot of time. |

I second Spliff's advice the F50fd is wonderful easy to use and takes
absolutely great pictures. Not as good as the F31, but better than the rest.
I bought mine for $225 on Amazon.com, delivered stateside.
You'll be paying about 300,000w even on-line.
The F100fd is due out shortly.

Interestingly I just bought a zalman cooler from Yongsan and brought my printout from danawa (50,000) but paid only 48,000 - looks like it happens both ways. |

There are three brands worth considering:
canon
fuji
panasonic lumix
You can't go wrong with all of their point and shoots. Panasonic has the best lenses in the industry with Leica but Canon has the best engine.
Also, don't buy at homeplus. At the very least do it through gmarket. You'll pay a better price and get some accessories thrown in. |

This advice is point and shoot only, and I am not an expert merely well read on the P&S per my shopping research.
I own an F50fd and had a Panny LZ7.
If your looking for point and click indoors
Fuji Finepix (F50fd)
If your looking for point and shoot outdoors
Panasonic Lumix (TZ3, TZ2).
Panasonic makes good cameras as does Fuji.
You would definately be playing it safe with any
Canon also consider Nikon.
If you have some specific need look at Ricoh and Olympus.
If you want cameras with Gimmicks see Casio and Samsung.
If you want prestige and have some money try Leica.
I forgot to mention Sony, Sony has some wonderful cameras, some have
smile detection, where the camera won't shoot until the subject smiles.
Camera labs does some video reviews.

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions. I think I will go for the Ixus, though I still can't find much info on it. I'll try and find a good price on G-market or go the tech place in Kwangju (actually I live in the South), but once I have a better idea of how much I should pay I'll be less likely to be swindled.
Still, nobody actually has one, eh? |
