| I get in around noon and leave early the next morning so I probably should stay somewhere not too far from the airport. Any suggestions about reasonable lodging (hostels OK) and activities? |

The new HK airport is miles from anywhere, like Incheon. There are frequent trains / busses into Kowloon / HK Island.
I stayed at this place in 2004:

It was around 300 hk$, but might be dearer now. Recommended, though. |

| I already tried to book there but, unfortunately, it closed in 2006. Someone told me all the hostels are in the slums. Is this so? |

| Mirador Mansions in Kowloon is okay. Try the Garden Hostel. The Chungking Mansions next door is a bit of a slum, but will do in a pinch. Don't be put off by the exteriors. The interiors are nicely furbished. |

| Stay at a Sauna. Cheap, relaxing and they're everywhere. Hotels are for chumps. |

You have about the right amount of time to see Hong Kong AND Macau. Get on the hydrofoil to Macau in the afternoon and enjoy the day there.
Come back to Hong Kong that night and stay in one of the mansions (guesthouses) and check out the diversity and excitement of Hong Kong.
A lot of those buildings are slated to be torn down--if they haven't already. So do yourself a favor and see the Tsim Sha Tsui area of "shang gang" , China.

Hong Kong is great.
If you just have the day, I'd say catch the bus into Kowloon (A-21 I think it is), especially if you're staying at Mirador or Chungking. We stayed at Chingking last time....holy shitehole...but cheap. Try to find a hotel online... www.asiarooms.com or somthing.
Then walk down to the pier and take the ferry across to Central...you can get a bus to the Peak tram. Ride up the tram to the Peak, or walk up it, if you prefer.
When you come down, walk on into Hong Kong Park, where they have a great aviary. Loads of free parks. Take a stroll down by the pier...
Check out Soho, the Ladies market and Jade market...get a map at the airport.
Hong Kong is fun. Vibrant, energetic, bustly...a great city.
Crap...I just checked the date, and realized the OP has been and gone. Oh well.
