Just curious. My job is starting to drive me up the wall. Would like to see what others are experiencing. |

I teach anywhere from 5 to 9 a day but half of them are no more than 20 minutes in length.
You shouldn't be working more than 6 hours a day. I would go crazy if I was pulling in more than that. |

I teach nine 35 min classes a day and one 50 minute class. I have gotten to the point where the crappy book ran out a while ago for some of the older classes so I just give them free time for the majority of the class. I am at my wits end with it. Have been for weeks now. The only thing that's stopping me from getting a new job in a better location with better hours is the new Visa regulation process. |

I teach two one hour long classes in the morning and three 40 minute classes in the afternoon. It's not too bad. |

I teach an average of four 45-minute classes a day.
Not too bad, actually.
My hakwon has a rule for foreign teachers: no more than 24 classes a week. Anything more is overtime, and optional. So that's nice. Even still, 24 classes a week is too many in my opinion. |

Anywyas, to important matters. You guys make it sound like it's hard to get laid in Sout Korea. Is this true? What are the women like at the bars? I plan on going out a good bit and meeting lot's of Korean women. I have always been attracted to Oriental women in general. But I will confess. I like my women easy when I'm out drinking. Is this type of scene in Busan? |
This was your first post on this board and I remember the reaction it got. Looking back, don't you think it may have been wise to seek contractual advice first, rather than worry about how you were gonna get laid?
How far into your contract are you? Two or three months? If you're already going crazy with your job this early into the contract it might best to try and find something better, even with the new visa regs. You teach kindy, right? Can you really imagine teaching the same classes for 8 or 9 more months? If not, then I think you know what to do |

6, 50 minute classes over a 6 hour working day. I would be upset if I had to teach more than that without a proper break. |

I'm three and half months in. I did take the precautions early on and my chain was reported to have a great reputation but my recruiter lied to me about several things and failed to tell me that I would be working at a brand new school. I'm not going anywhere, though, because of a DUI on my record. Seven classes a day would be perfect for me. Ten is just too much...but oh well. |

I average about 5 /45 minute classes a day. Usually one or 2 breaks in-between. Not a bad schedule. My first hagwon was about 7/ 50 minute classes with no breaks. After 2 months got out of there!! |

Kentucker, everyone goes through what your going through. In fact, the 3.5 month mark is about the time where one starts to question what the f is going on around them. First three months are a high...new place, food, people and what not. Next three months is downhill...boredom to an extent. The next three months is a high, half way plus there, in cruise mode. The final three months is a countdown titled "get me the HECK out of here!"
No poo...i read a study about this a few years back. Just hang in there and go with the flow. Most folks if not all started out with a hogwon job in Korea. And im sure most were worked to the bone. I promise you this much, if you having fun it will be the fastest year of your life!
All the best bro and stay away from Korean dudes after walking out of M2!

It gets better. What I do is, when all my material runs out... I just teach them English. Simple as that. Have conversations with your older kids... talk about politics, interests, hobbies, anything. Then have them write lengthy, guided essays where you pick a topic, they write, you supervise and then have them correct and rewrite. It sounds boring, but it takes a lot of awkwardness of your hands.
With the younger kids, teach them sentences that they'll use, then deconstruct them and show them how to make other sentences, et cetera. Make a game out of it, teach them vocabulary with pictures, even if you have to print them from google search, always recycle your materials for different classes when appropriate too.
...and with the younger kids, there is nothing wrong with teaching the exact same thing six or seven times as long as you change the delivery.
Sorry if I'm sounding preachy, but these things help me a lot and I have the same problems of you (no/bad material, behavioural issues, et cetera). |

I teach Business English from 6:00am to 7am M-F.
I teach a Neurologist 7:15am-8-15am M-Th.
I teach at Elementary school (now on break) 9:00am-12:10pm M-F
I teach at a hagwon from 2:30pm to 9:00pm M-F
Nap time from 1:00pm to 2:00pm (my hagwon bought me a cot) :D M-F
Long day but do-able.
And to the OP, sounds like you have hit the 3 month wall. It only gets easier. |

The younger kids are no problem for me. I sincerely enjoy teaching them even though they get out of hands sometimes. Some of my middle school classes are hell, though. I absolutely despise one class. It was good until three little bratty new girls came and now they control the class. The others are like sheep to them and act the way they do now. I got on to them about cell phones today...this being my 7th class in a row...and two of them started mocking me and telling me they werent using the phones that they were just on their desks. I told them it doesn't matter to put them up or minus points on their next test.
They started yelling minus this minus that and I said ok, minus two...minus three...minus four and minus five until they finally got quite and put their phones up. Every kid in the class was glaring at me like I was evil, though. Then when the class ended, two of those little brats went up to one of my bosses and complained about the minuses. Truth is, if I had it my way, they would be running 10 miles and making Fs on their tests just because of their horrendous attitudes. Seriously, some of these kids' parents are doing a pathetic job with their kids acting this way. Before things went awry in that class today, we were playing a spelling game in which one a person says a word and the next person must say a word that begins with the last letter of the first word. I spell out the words on the board as they write them but sometimes have a very difficult time understanding their pronounciation so I always have to ask...what? Then the little bratty ones get huge attitudes and mock me and yell out the spellings in disrespectful tones.
Also, they always have this horrible attitude when I first walk in the class and it always goes downhill from there. All of my other classes are great for the most part. Even my adult class which I used to not like.
I am seriously thinking about walking into that class the next time I have it, Thursday, and writing 'bad attitudes' on the board and then have them pull out some paper and write down random shit that read from the book the entire class. They drove me to my wits end today. |
