As a former life long fatty, I can give some tips for you.

I used to weigh 250lbs, I got down to 170lbs.

I did this in probably too short of time, only over 7 months, but it worked.

I will be repeating some things people said, but I just want to list what I did, which of course, is nothing special or revolutionary:

1. Lay off the pop, err...soda. (Sorry, regional dialect). I seriously lost 7lbs just like that, and I didn't drink that much soda to begin with.
2. Ditto the beer, and sugared fruit juices.
3. Keep hydrated. People think they drink a lot of water. I thought so, too. But you have to drink a SH*TLOAD of water each day. It helps with your digestive system, and helps force out the bad stuff much more quickly.
4. EAT BREAKFAST. Never skip this meal, ever. If you do, not only do you feel shitty, but your metabolism is out of whack for the whole day. I thought this was crap, but it really is true.
5. Unless you lift or workout like a demon, be careful with eating too much rice/white bread/potatoes/starchy stuff, etc.... (carbs are evil if not used)
6. Get to bed on a regular schedule and keep to it.
7. This goes for eating, too. Keep as tight of a schedule as you can with eating, and sleeping.
8. Don't starve yourself -- you only will lose what muscle a person has, not fat.
9. Keep the "fun" snacks as a rare moment. I always liked fruits and vegetables, but never realized how picky I was about eating them until I decided to go full on and lose the weight. Carrots and salt-less saltines or low salt pretzels make a good snack, I noticed. Just to spice up the "apple a day" thing.
10. On that note, don't eat the heavily sugared cereals, pancakes, sausage type breakfasts. Always get the portions of fruits and veggies. The day of backbreaking farming labor are over; hence we don't need and can't use the high-fat, high-protein, high-everything meals...especially breakfast.

11. Most people here are right, you don't have to workout 2 hours a day everyday as an only means to lose weight, but regular exercise REALLY does help. Also, stay away from making running the only part or most of your exercise routine. It is easy to do and good for your heart and overall good, but only doing that actually saps the muscles as well, and you won't be helping yourself as much as you think.

If I had to choose two from there that will help you lose 5kg just like that -- the drinking bit. Substitute tea and water for soda, beer, and 자몽 juice. You'll piss like a racehorse, but you will shed away pounds...or kilos, easily.

(Also, some fat IS good, like someone else said before. Be lucky, you have the means to make more muscle should you choose, than Mr. Kim next to you.)

99% probably everyone knows...but few seem to do; otherwise the ajummas on the street would be friggin rich, and chicken wouldn't always come with a 2L of Coke.

One more thing about carbs:
Swearing off them totally is not good.
There are simple carbs, and complex carbs. Brown rice and beans and corn will not make you fatter, as long as you don't strap on the twenty-kilo feed bag, you know what I mean? And the dietary fiber will help you out in other ways.
Whit rice is, essentially, bad. It's the equivalent of white bread: it's got all the husk (fiber) knocked off. Bad!
Potatoes are pretty starchy but if you eat the skins they give you vitamins.
I shudder to think of a life without carbs.

Anyone have any success stories in losing weight without crash dieting? I'm hoping people with actual experience in the matter can share some ideas.

1. Reduce overall intake of food
2. Significantly reduce proportions of sugar, meat, dairy, and carbs in diet (including beer and liquor)
3. Exercise a sufficient amount daily

Protein is good. I eeat at least 180 grams of protein a day.. I like fat too, it comes in the form of healthy fats like Seeds, nuts, fish oil.

If anything lay of the damn carbs.

I was 282 and now I am 160.

This seems like a good place to ask this question. I want to try isometric stretching but I can't find a good website/download on it. Could someone give me the lowdown on it or tell me more about it?

Great post, lucas_p. Especially this part:

I spent YEARS reading men's health, researching, planning my big weight loss program, getting frustrated because my schedule never magically opened up to allow for it, etc, etc.

Resigning myself to to the idea that exercising 3-5 times a week just doesn 'work' for me, I took the slow and steady approach of trying to gradually lose weight, but that led directly to a "what's the point?" mentality of indulging too much, because I could just be more strict 'tomorrow.'

Finally I got fed up with all of it and just started DOING it. I threw out the notebooks and websites and all that stuff and started applying everything religiously.

The slow and steady method works for some people because it helps them to change their overall lifestyle in a manageable fashion, but for me it just didn't work. What I needed was the encouragement of seeing the pounds drop off quickly, effectively letting me mentally gather enough momentum to make it through the days when I really just feel like eating a whole pizza. Some days I do let myself indulge, even in pizza or ice cream, but I try not to overdo it and I limit the cheat days to once a week (okay, I admit it, the holiday season was hard).

I probably lost weight too fast at first, and I lost some muscle as well (was just doing cardio), but that's slowed up since I've switched over to doing weight training primarily. Even though the weight loss has slowed down significantly in the past couple months, I'm still happy to say I've lost about 15 kilos in the past 4-5 months (most of it in the initial two-three months).

I weigh 3 lbs less than I did 8 years ago. Yet my waist is 7 inches smaller.

Exercise, eat well (meaning, better than you do now), drink lots of water, build muscle.

Somebody please elaborate on sodium. As I understand it, it's a diuretic in the short term and unpleasant in the long term...other than that, what's so bad if countered in the short term by more water intake? thanks

Thanks for all the tips! Very Happy

I'm going to go all out on this one and: No holds barred except for the smoking and getting a pet bear Laughing

That cheeseburger looks really good too but starting tomorrow, I'll be implementing everyone's ideas- No more sugar, soda, beer, juices; eat breakfast in the morning after a morning bike ride and, no more processed stuff like ramyeon.

I found a website where a guy with a nearly identical physique transformed himself in about 3 months back in 2003, by eating really well and lifting weights, and kept a blog with weekly and monthly pictures up until now. I don't know if his results are typical or not but I'll give it a go and see.

At age 34 this guy went from 215 lbs (97.5 kg) to 174 lbs (79 kg) in 3 months, here are the pictures that he took of his monthly progress:

http://www.johnstonefitness.com/all/front/m.php

Here's more about it:

Quote:

Diet:
Changing my diet was a must. A typical day of food for me used to look something like this:

BREAKFAST: None

LUNCH: (2) Tuna sandwiches with tons of mayo, (4) slices of white American cheese, (2) hamburger buns, ½ family size bag of kettle chips.

DINNER: Huge (and I mean HUGE) plate of lasagna, 4 or 5 slices of garlic bread loaded with butter, no vegetable, 3-4 glasses or red wine or 3-4 beers.

In addition to all that, I'd drink 6-8 non-diet sodas every single day (sometimes more), I never drank water, I'd snack on all kinds of junk food like popcorn loaded with oils (sometimes coconut oil!), I'd eat chocolates and cookies and ice cream all the time. I did this for years and years. My daily exercise consisted of getting up to get more food.
