i skimmed over the article, but i don't agree with the author's opinion.
there's more access to education now than there was in this fantasy time of well-informed americans that the author seems to remember.
there are always people that look back on the past with rose colored lenses.
mass-media, marketing towards various groups, watered down news, etc has been around for a long time.
people now have a lot more things that they are expected to know than in the 1940s (how to use a computer being one).
and i doubt that someone in preWW2 america knew where some european or asian country was any better than people do now.
people motivated to learn will exist regardless of the time period, and people who are satisfied with whatever will also exist.
i'm sure that in 2050 someone will write a similar article on how manners in the early 2000s were much better, how people were more informed, etc, etc. |
