I tried searching this but had no luck!
A friend called me and said that Carne Station in Hongdae closed down, they're becoming a seafood restaurant!!
This is horrible news!
We have 25 people getting together next month for a joint Birthday bash and this was the location for the party! We were calling it "Carne Station Carnage", last year as a birthday that has been talked about since! It's hubby's last big blast out before baby comes, and I want him to have the best time and last year was so much fun, we figured this was perfect!
I checked their website and they only have 2 locations now, MyeongDong and Gangnam! Has anyone been to these locations? Specifically MyeongDong?
This is so sad! |

| Carne Station in Gangnam is the same as the former one in Hongdae. Only difference is that it is not in Hongdae but in Gangnam. |

| Good riddance. That place was a cesspool - between the double-dippers at the sauce stations and the obnoxious drunks, hands down the worst 25 bucks ever spent. |

| Yeah, they were probably losing money because of its huge foreign customer base. I noticed Westerners eat a whole lot more than their Korean counterparts who just sit there, take a few bites and sip on soju. |

That and westerners have a habit of pounding half a bottle or more of bourbon/whisky/vodka or a hell load of beer or wine whilst they're there. Most westerners I know regarded it as a $25 all you can drink hard liquor buffet with some free barbecue on the side. I know I got more than $25 worth of value when I visited there (going by supermarket prices for what I consumed) |

Well what's the big boo-hoo? So you all have seafood instead. Hey, seafood is healthier than meat, you know. I'll betcha the new place specialises in live octopus, hacked to wriggly pieces & smothered in red pepper sauce. mmm-MMM!

Could be. If I were the owner, I might post big "Foreigners Not Welcome" signs outside. Hey, I gotta save my business! And besides, it's not like the police or anyone is ever going to make me take them down. Either that or jack up the fare to 50, ~ 70,000 won. Or charge extra for the booze. Gotta do sump'm.
I was here before the very first Carne Station opened and I've watched the gradual changes take place in terms of the variety of food items, the meal-shift scheduling, and the racial composition of their customers. My visits have become increasingly infrequent and random over the years, and I'm always struck by what a serious foreigner hangout that place has become -- and not unrelated to that, by how much more fascistly the management enforces the meal seating shifts. I don't recall ever seeing the management back in the 1990s send in the goon squad to roust diners out when their time was up, but now I see it almost every time I go. And I've only seen groups of foreigners (including those I was with) given the bum's rush. Never saw them have to shoo Korean customers out the door.

I've got mixed feelings about the closing of Carne Station branches. I certainly don't want to see fewer dining options for people, even if I don't eat much meat anymore. And Carne Station is a good, logical choice for big noisy gatherings. On the other hand, I did find myself caring less and less for that whole "mess hall cattle-trough" routine. That and I get less & less value for my money there, because I have dwindling patience for things like... having to position one's self at the food trough for 5 minutes while the staff slowly replenishes "the good meat", only to have a squadron of ajummas swoop down from out of nowhere and carry off half a cow on three plates before you can snag 2 servings.

Have they changed it, or do they still sell those weird off-brands of booze? I'm personally not much of a brand snob when it comes to that, but damn, they stock brands I've never even heard of. |

That, and also a chance to stock up on home-supplies too. I remember waking up one Sunday morning post-Carne, and finding a full bottle of 'Evan Williams' (Carne Stations proto-JD bourbon) on my bedside table. |
