It's subscription-only, but the gist is that McCain's aides had to stage an intervention over his romantic relationship with a female lobbyist:

Quote:
In interviews, the two former associates said they joined in a series of confrontations with Mr. McCain, warning him that he was risking his campaign and career. Both said Mr. McCain acknowledged behaving inappropriately and pledged to keep his distance from Ms. Iseman. The two associates, who said they had become disillusioned with the senator, spoke independently of each other and provided details that were corroborated by others.

The NYT has apparently had this story for at least three months.

And... wait for it...

...they endorsed McCain for President on January 25.

I love the smell of sandbags in the morning.

No chance that 'Ms' is a typo is there? It's been 3 or 4 months since we've had a Republican gay sex scandal.

This may not have the repercussion a person might think. Members of the AARP may well react with, "Way to go, John!" I can see campaign ads now with McCain's head pasted on the Energizer Bunny.

No, we're not that lucky, sadly. Vicki Iseman is the lady in question.

If McCain provably diddled a lobbyist, of either gender, he's done. The GOP will probably have to go with someone else. And no, it won't be Huckabee, at least I'd be incredibly shocked if it were.

Well we'll see if any proof comes out. If it does, it would be pretty funny.

Did I read that right--it's supposed to have happened in 2000, not this year?

Yeah, it's supposed to have happened in 2000. I left that out of the original post, sorry.

And yes, it's probably BS. At the very least it's thinly-sourced.

Even if it is true, who the *beep* cares? I don't see how it would affect his ability to be a leader.

Tell that to Bill Clinton.

I don't really care either. I mean, McCain wouldn't get my vote unless he personally saved the world from alien invaders, so what I think is a moot point anyway. But the Republicans definitely do care.

MSNBC has a detailed story on the issue, similar to the NYT story.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23263742/

Here's what McCain said:
Quote:
"Any hint that I might have acted to reward a supporter," he wrote, "would be taken as an egregious act of hypocrisy."

Here's what he did;
Quote:
John McCain, the Republicans' likely presidential nominee, also cast votes today in the Senate, siding with his party to preserve telecom immunity and pass Bush's preferred bill.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2008/feb/12/terrorism.usa

Regardless of an affair, he has clearly shown that his 'ethics' are as bought off as Bush's.

There is no definitive proof that he schtooped this Iseman lady, but reading between the line seems to indicate this. The real wrinkle is that he appears to have written some letter and done other favors for Iseman. I don't think trading sex for political favors is any worse than trading money for political favors, but for a guy that's railed against such things it could, and should, have some significant blowback.
