Hi all,

If any of the board experts may be able to please answer...

i want my employer to provide PAID RETURN airfares (+2weeks unpaid holidays), so that i can return home and visit family before renewing for another 12 month contract.

is this often requested by other teachers and is it generally granted by employers? whats the best way to ask for paid airfares?

i would have already used up my 2 weeks of paid vacation during the year (plus national holidays), so happy to get 2 weeks unpaid holidays.

Are you saying you want a free flight to Korea when you come over the first time, a free flight home for a visit, another free flight back to work the second year...and presumably another free flight back home at the end of your contract?

Ya-ta, you pretty much read that right. What is the problem with that? Contract 1 gives a free return flight, Contract 2 gives a free return flight.

I really don't see the problem - OP, you'd might want to get those 2 weeks as paid vac, something of a bonus for renewing or what have you.

OP, I'm not sure of the best way to go about this, but i'd just mention to the Boss you want to renew and tell him to pay for/buy you, a return ticket. I mean, he can always give buy your one-way ticket now...and then reimburse you for your returning 1 way ticket, at a much heavier cost Smile

Does it have anything in your contract about renewing?

EPIK contracts state that they'll pay for a return flight home for the last two weeks of your contract before you start back for the beginning of your new contract and it's paid.

Is this where you got the idea from?

It depends on your relationship with your Boss. Do you think you could ask this, which to many here would not seem to be unreasonable in the least. Otherside said it well. The actual monetary value of him doing this makes no different if you were to leave. He'd have to buy a ticket for a new teacher as well as pay for your ticket out. It's worth just asking, any reasonable person would say yes. Wink

Often a major reason for the boss to re-sign you is so you keep teaching. Mommy isn't going to like that jisu isn't getting her English for 2 weeks.

This should be covered in your contract under a renewal clause.

you should have something like this in your contract

Quote:

Article 10 (Renewal) ① The Term of Employment stated in Article 5 hereof may be renewed by the mutual written agreement between Employer and Employee, provided that each renewed employment term does not exceed one (1) year.
② In the case of renewal of this Contract pursuant to the foregoing ①, Employee shall be given two weeks for a home leave which shall take place 2 calendar weeks prior to the contract end date specified in Article 5 hereof until the day immediately preceding the commencement of the renewed term. This two week home leave will be counted as part of the contract term, and accordingly salary will be paid.
③ In the event that the employee travels to his/her home country pursuant to the foregoing ②, Employee's round trip airfare shall be reimbursed by Employer after Employee's return to Korea. The round trip airfare for Employee's flight shall be based on rate provided for in Article 11 ① hereafter.


if its a standard public contract

Ya-ta-Boy - yes thats right way of understanding the situation

Dome Vans - thanks for the EPIK info. no i did not get the idea from EPIK. really just thought i would like to visit home after 12months. and i was sure i wasn't the first person who thought of doing this, so wanted to see the forum's views on the subject.

yingwenlaoshi - yes, finding a fill in teacher is a reasonable concern for employer

This is a valid point but what these folks here need to learn is that that couple of weeks is not going to make any difference and it certainly is not the end of the world. It may even have it positive effects.

One of the most frustrating things for me over the years was getting a vacation when I needed it--and when I had the money to take it.

The look in their eyes when you ask for time off is something else. We don't exactly live in the next county--and we have different customs and needs for time off--like class reunions, Christmas and other personal reasons.

But this problem becomes extreme when a teacher can't even get some time off between contracts. As you know, that extension--especially now, is very beneficial to the school--more actually than for the teacher.

Most often they save recruiting costs and there is no delay in a replacement.

Look at it this way--in today's environment, can they get a replacement easily and on a timely basis?

Quite possible not. Now is the time to stand your ground in matters like this. They do not cost the organization any more money and make our conditions better.

I have renewed at my school and in 18 months time have taken two trips back to the states--one for 10 days and the other 14. The school didn't even dock my pay on the first one, and I don't even care if this one ends up unpaid.

He didn't like it--he had that look in his eyes, but there wasn't much he could do other than grant them--and he new it.

Depth, explain to your boss the simple economics of keeping you on and providing what you are asking. It's better for them, than going to the trouble of hiring a new teacher. Consider his up front costs, airfare, recruiter and general disruption caused by staff turnover. My wife and I got the same thing in 2007 for staying with our current hagwon. Smile
