Just out of curiosity I was curious if anyone knew if those yellow radishes were dyed or if they grew that color. Are they generally healthy for you? The same for kimbop?

I'm fairly certain they're dyed. Nothing edible grows that colour naturally. Wink

It's called 단무지 or "danmooji" which is basically pickled radish - it's not originally that color, it's originally white. Love this stuff, but I basically grew up on it as a kid.

I don't think it's good or bad for you. Probably not a whole lot of nutritional value, but I can't see it being unhealthy either.

What do you mean by is it the same for kimbap? Are you talking about the danmooji inside the kimbap? Then yeah, same thing.

I just did a quick Wikipedia search for yellow #5 and related food colorings. Ugh. Yellow #5 (and others) come from coal tar. Carmine / E120 / "Natural Red 4" come from cochineals - beetle-like insects - which are boiled, dried, and ground into powder.

Where's the emoticon for vomiting?

The emoticon isn't here, but if it was, it would probably some mix like " Embarassed + Shocked "

I eat them daily and I don't mind them. I would much rather have kimchi though.

I know them by the name 'daikon radishes' (or just daikons). They're originally white in color, but apparently there's one strain (the Sakurajima daikon) that's white on the outside but bright pink on the inside ...

As Freakstar pointed out, takuan (沢庵) / danmuji (단무지) is the variety you'll find in gimbap.
