I have this one offer and have an interview with them this weekend in Seoul. I live and have been working a couple of hours outside Seoul for 3 years.

There seems to be a situation with transferring as far as my address is concerned. There's an immigration office in my current town about a 5-minute walk away. That is where I would do the transfer with the new signed contract, business registration, sponsor form, my passport, alien card, and release letter.

I'll get the contract, etc. from the new school this weekend and was under the impression that I'd only have to take all of these documents back to my local immi office and do the transfer. The only thing, I get a call from the recruiter telling me that my local immi office can't transfer me from hagwon to hagwon (she called them with my alien number). She said that the Seoul office has no problem with it. The transfer, apparently, needs to be done at my local immi office, but she tells me that I have to change my address with the Seoul office before the local office can do the transfer. Apparently it takes a long time for the local office to do the address change or something.

This all being the case, I have to stay in Seoul until Monday and go into the Seoul immi office to do the address change thing and then head back to my local town, go to work, and then go into my local immi office the next morning and do the transfer.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if I really need to do this. I thought all along that I could just do the transfer locally and now this annoying problem comes up. I'm also wondering if they're trying to lock me into this contract by getting me to change my address with Seoul immi.

I am, of course, going to go into my local immi office tomorrow morning and verify if this is all true.

Anyone heard of this one?

Is the current address on your ARC a Seoul address?

If you're no longer living in Seoul, then you should have gone to Immi and filed the application to change the address on your ARC. Sounds like this could be what's holding you up.

I've never lived in Seoul. I've spent my whole time (3 years) at one school 2 hours south of Seoul in the country. I'm moving to and starting a job in Seoul March 1st.

The recruiter/school is telling me that I have to register with the Seoul immi office before I transfer my job over to them from my local immi office.

They're saying I have to go to Seoul and change my address and then come back here and transfer my status over to them. I'm just wondering if they're pulling one over on me to get me locked into this job. I don't see why I can't do the transfer and change of address from here. They're saying that it takes too long, or a long time, to change my address from here even though I have to transfer jobs from here.

You see the problem is that I don't want to necessarily take this position. I'm leaning towards it, but I'm not sure. I have other interviews in Seoul this weekend. If this is all true, I can only do the change of address thing at Seoul immi at the earliest Monday morning. And if this is my only option and I want to check the other schools out, I'm going to have to go to each one and tell them that I'll get back to them and meet them on Sunday or Monday to finalize everything before going to Seoul immi to do the change of address. My best option would be to have Monday off, but I don't really want to do that right before my contract ends. But if this is all BS, it would be much easier to meet all the schools and decide on one and give them my answer on Sunday and sign up and head back here and do the transfer.

I guess I'll just have to do that. This one school's going to be p1ssed when I tell them that I'll get back to them later with my final decision. It's good waiting till the end to get the better deal since schools are desperate. Especially now. But the negative part of all this is that there's only so much time.

I think it's kind of strange to register my change of address before everything is transferred and finalized. I'm guessing, if this is all legit, that they need my proper ARC with the correct address of the new school in order to do the job transfer. Still...

Hi there.

Sorry to hijack your post (I don't have an answer for what you're asking), but I was just wondering; when you say you're transferring your visa, do you mean that your visa isn't up yet?

I've just been told (5 months into my contract) that my school could close by the end of next week. If I have another employer, and all the documents you said, can I transfer hagwon to hagwon?

I'd be really grateful if you have any info....

Good luck with your new job

If the new school is in Seoul, it seems like you should be able to do everything (change of address, change of workplace, and extension of sojourn) at the Seoul Immigration OfficeMokdong or Anguk, depending on where in Seoul the school's located; you'll want to find this out beforehand. I don't understand why you'd have to register a new address at Seoul Immi, then go back to the other office to do the workplace change and sojourn extension.

And the more I think about it, the more I wonder why the address on your ARC would have any bearing on your workplace change/sojourn extension application. Seems to me it shouldn't. Something doesn't add up here.

The recruiter is now telling me that I need to do everything at the Seoul office. She called me and sent me an e-mail saying that the school owners would take all my documents to the Seoul office. I don't know, man...

I'm going into my local office here shortly and I'll confirm all of that hopefully. Looks like I'll have to tell them, if this is all true, that I'll get back to them with a decision Saturday night or Sunday morning. I have other schools to meet.

I don't know exactly, but I do know that when I change addresses, I go to my local Gu-chon office (it's the dong office in some areas) and do a change of address. It's all done that day, and I can get a print-out of it. All I need is my ARC (and maybe my passport). I just notify them and it's done.

Heck, go to the dong or gu office (it'll be one of them) in the area in Seoul where you're moving, and just go from there!

Yeah I went to my local immi in the country and they confirmed that I have to do it in Seoul and that they were talking to the recruiter.

Just wanted to make sure.
