I've seen on a few websites that LMB is being blamed for the destruction of Namdaemun. Why is this? Is it because, when he was the Seoul mayor, he was behind cutting the security budget? If that's the case then perhaps he could be held part responsible.

The other idea is that, through turning the Namdaemun traffic island into a pedestrian plaza, it was much easier for the arsonist to get access to the gate. I don't think LMB should be blamed for this. Creating the plaza was a very good idea and, even if it did make it a bit easier to carry out the arson attack, there was absolutely no way to foresee that terrible night.

I'm strongly opposed to most of LMB's policies and development plans, and I still maintain that the guy is a bit of a weasel, but he has to be given credit for his efforts to make Seoul more pedestrian friendly.

I fully agree. My wife was quick to point the finger at Lee Myungbag. And when the arsonist apologised to Lee Myungbag for causing trouble for him, she lost all sympathy for the guy. Sure I don't like the guy or his policies or his loud religious convictions or his shady past, but it's not like he wanted the thing burned down.

As I learnt during that recent daycare abuse scandal, everyone is always looking for scapegoats everywhere. People started blaming the police, just hoping to see more heads roll than out of any sense of right.

Plus, he's been cleared of corruption. Prosecutor's interviewed him over beef soup at a famously exclusive restaurant, and found that he did nothing wrong. Laughing
