I won't post his name...not even his handle here. I just don't want even the faintest nagging feeling that I have exposed myself to potential problems.

Now, a "how to" for people who come to tech with a problem:

~ Make the problem public. Bring your problem to the forum so that at least the replies can give you some idea of the general direction of the diagnosis. That way, an unsolicited PM stating that you need a new discombobulationizer will signal an alarm.

~ Make any offered solutions public. If someone PMs you with an offer for help, post about what they believe the problem to be. Again, you can see if people here agree or think you are being hosed.

~ Learn the basics. Find out what kind of CPU you have, mainboard, RAM (how much and what kind), graphics, sound. Knowing this will enable you to Google any parts that were changed and see if they are old (thus, used), cheap or otherwise bad. It seems the predator swaps out victims' parts for used or barely functional ones. If you can't get the right software or don't know where to look, post or PM. You will get help.

~ Use the list of trustworthy people. The list I made above (which is far from exhaustive) are people that I recommend listening to. Everyone here has a specialty and most of those posters check in fairly regularly. Turn to them and if they don't know (for example, PMing me about webpage building), they will refer you to someone who does.

The predator has been active here for a long time; I wonder how much money he has made from this forum. Yesterday bought a TV off of him years ago; a TV that didn't work well from day one.

Use this forum, folks. I can say honestly that the group that is here now make this forum very, very strong. It rivals many dedicated computer forums I have seen.

Enough. Sorry to those who are sick of this thread (cbclark4 Wink ), but IMHO, it needed to be said. I would make this a sticky if it were my board.

Actually I would specifically make your posted (quoted) a sticky with a link to page one of this thread.

Well, Superhero...maybe someday Dave (and his minions) will realize that the people who frequent this site are the ONLY reason this site makes any money. In addition, he might also realize that people won't willingly have a love-hate relationship with a forum that's too light on the love side forever...there are several alternatives.

Who IS this guy? If we can't talk in specifics then maybe some discreet PM's might narrow it down a bit so that if people want to know, they can be given some idea of who to look out for, without damaging the reputations of people who might not deserve it to the extent the person in question does.

Sorry for the edit. I've been havin' a helluva a day....the voice of reason just rang me up and was pretty convincing.

Seems there are 2 guys with the same name.

The guy who worked for PaperTiger is not the same guy I originally posted about.

Odd they have the same name, among other similarities.

Anyhow, to the guy who helped PaperTiger, I am sorry for the confusion. I take PaperTiger's word, but you were never meant to be in the crosshairs of this thread.

Thanks eamo.

I didn't say it wasn't him...I was just asking for clarification to rule him out.

You didn't say it wasn't who?

Rolling Eyes

just post the name, or PM it to someone who will. That's the only way to stop people getting taken for a ride.

I agree or its best to not even post the warning at all!

It's not the only way.

The way that I outlined above is best.

Posting his name just isn't necessary. If someone else wants to spill his username (others know, but I think they agree that there is no need to divulge publicly) that is out of my hands, but it won't come from me and as I said, if people make their computer problems public, there will be no more problems from this guy. Post your problem, wait for some replies before accepting an offer from an ambulance chaser.

If other Dave's members are reading this thread, then they know enough now to not take unsolicited PMs offering help from just anyone, but to post here first. In that sense, posting his username is not necessary.

Also, how hard is it to get another username if one is outed? Certainly not hard enough to deter someone who's making a lot of money off it.

This is exactly why it's not useful to out his name. He could just go get a new one then no one would know who he was.

Actually for the many boards that I've been on for donkey years I can't say that the people here are as friendly and as helpful as some people think. Its more like a "we are THE group so yeah pick a number and get in line if you want to be a part of it" kind of thing.

Sometimes people lose touch of normality and start thinking they're more important than they think they are (who also tend to be incredibly ungrateful), while others are so incredibly helpful they inspire you to return the favour to others which I still do.

And pkang, computers are a hobby! There's no getting away from them (CS alumni here).

Damn dude. You don't think I am helpful? You don't think demo, beaver, superhero, kpprok, spliff (yes, even spliff) are helpful? What about the gang load of others I haven't even mentioned? They aren't helpful either? Wow. That's messed up. Seriously.
