My recruiter has just informed me that the public school I will be working for has been unable to provide an apartment close to my school and I'll now need to commute everyday by bus for 20 minutes. I told him that I wanted to the school to pay for my bus fare but he said that as my contract does not mention anything about providing transport, the school will not pay for it.
I think it's rather unfair that seeing as they are the ones that screwed up, by leaving it to the last minute to find me an apartment, I now must fork out 40,000Won every month because of their mistake. |

Congrats!
Should tell them that you'll accept only if you are allowed to leave early as soon as you're finished teaching. |

You're lucky. Mine is 40 mins one way. And I live in in Anyang, so it's not like I'm out in the middle of nowhere. |

i'm about 30min away by train. BUT, it's a good thing! if you lived close to your school, you might constantly be running into your students or their parents... |

At one time , I was in a similar situation.I had to take the bus or taxi to school. At first , I was so pissed , then when I saw my apartment and what the area had to offer ,compared to the shit hole neighbourhood that the school was in.I was more then glad to accept the aprtment with the 20 min bus ride. |

True enough, but I'd rather not have to pay up to 480,000Won over a full year if I can get out of it. |

Hehe,
I was offered a choice between having an apartment walking distance to the school (in a pretty rural area with like 7 shops on the strip) or a 25minute bus ride away in one the busiest and vibiest areas in the province.
I chose door number 2.
I think it's pretty low that they didn't give you the choice of location, that's 40,000 a month and 40 minutes a day out of your pocket.
My old hagwon put me a 20 minute bus ride away from the school, and I was livid, the area's were comparable, (i.e. both on the poor/average side) and the time/money spent commutting really pissed me off. |

I plan to commute at the weekends to visit my girlfriend, so I'm not really all that concerned about living way out in the sticks. |

a 20 minute commute is nothing. Back home most people don't live that close to their jobs so I don't really understand what the problem is here. If you live in/near a major city it's quite common to have commutes of 40-90 minutes each way. |

Wouldn't it be fun to drive a motorbike?! It looks like I'll be 20km out from the school (housing) but do I care? Yes, it's a GOOD 20km! |

*gasp* not 20 min!!!!
it took me 20min by bus to get to work/university and the university is in my town.
i'd be ticked about paying for the bus, but 20 min is nothing...
sometimes i go to schools that take an hour to get to by train or bus. |

Presently, I have a 20 minute drive to school, 10-15 back.
On a bad day it can take 30-35 mins, but if I was busing it; it would probably take me 30-45 mins one way and would need to catch 2 buses.
Nevermind, 7 more days of contract. |

My apartment is to be 10-15 minutes from work ON FOOT.
That's a basic need of mine.

You have to decide for yourself what the difference is between need and want, where you draw the line about what's most important. |
