Interesting piece of trivia: the fellow that created all of the gore FX for Dawn of the Dead, Tom Savini, also directed the remake of Night of the Living Dead. He has a cameo in Dawn as well, portraying the biker Blades. |
I love Tom Savini. Sex Machine in Dusk til Dawn and if I recall correctly, isn't he the first biker to get dismembered in Dawn of the Dead? My girlfriend has them all on DVD, I'll have to watch Dawn again since I haven't seen it in a few years. We're definitely brining all the horror we can to Korea. Might help us unwind after a rough day to watch some Argento.

I think what I love most about Night is Romero's fearless approach to taboo exploding. Cannibalism, racism, the little girl that kills and eats her mother (Electra Complex to the nth degree), all topics never before dealt with so frankly nor explicitly in cinema, and there is Romero, the bespectacled cheerleader of the Apocalypse, holding sway over all. (My apologies to EA Poe.) |
Great point, it really was ground breaking. My mom caught it in the theatre when it came out thinking it would be your standard Vincent Price or William Castle horror. She said it was the most disturbing move experience of her life because she was TOTALLY unprepared for how visceral and shocking it was, especially back then. To this day when I visit I sometimes tease her about at Thanksgiving by grabbing a wing and gnawing on it while saying: "Baaaah-bara! They're cooooming for you!"
Sort of like when I accidentally saw Re-Animator on VHS back when I was like 8 and had NO idea how gruesome it would be. I never looked at hospitals the same way.
Off Topic but, how's the horror scene in Korea? Stuff like THE HOST aside, are there a few pretty good freaky movies in the cinemas there made locally? Or are they stuck on that J-Horror yuri ghost fad and the plot-less second rate wanna-be Takashi Miike gross-out movies? |

I remember reading review of "Night of the living dead" in an anthology when I was at university (my minor in school was film history/theory). I can't remember the critic's name, but he made the point that what made "Night" so shocking wasn't so much the violence of the movie, (because at that time there was the beginnings of what we now know as horror films), but the underlining social messages that GAR had in there just wasn't done at that time.
The critic also made the point that something else that made "Night" so shocking was that it was usually featured as a part of a double bill with low/no budget movies (along the lines of William Castle flicks) and when people went to see these double bills, they'd put "Night" on second. Well, NOBODY expected what they saw, as they thought the movie would just be a cheapo flick like the opening movie.
An interesting side note to all of that, I recently read an interview with Romero where he said that as they were bringing the movie to the editing studio, the newsflash came across that Martin Luther King had been assassinated. His first thought was about the ending of "Night" and what the reaction would be. |

I'll go with "Silence of the Lambs." First time I saw it, I was creeped. Later, not a big deal.
Anyone see "Cutting Moments"... yikes. |

There is definitely an extremely vibrant horror film sub-culture here, but as with anything, you may have to dig a little to find the diamond in the rough. Your comment about unwinding with a little Argento made me snicker, as there have been numerous times when I have considered re- enacting the opening sequence from Suspiria on some little smart ass.
As far as bringing a lot of horror with you, it is possible to find a number of good titles here, depending on where you will be living. I would recommend bringing some of the more obscure stuff with you, as that is somewhat harder to find here. |

The Mothman Prophecies really haunted me for ages after I saw it. It had a good balance of on-screen scares combined with that more subtle psychological effect.
It's corny now but Psycho freaked me out the first time I saw it too for similar reasons - Bates is just such a disturbing character.
Gore doesn't do it for me, it's that 'disturbing' element that always gets to me. |

Check out the game F.E.A.R for the xbox 360. At first the games graphics dont really pull you in but the gameplay and horror aspects are pretty freaky. Nothing scarier than a little girl who is/isn't really there shadowing you through the entire game combined with AI soldiers that actually feel like they are hunting you. An overlooked game for sure. |

The Omen
The only movie that I have seen as an (albeit young) adult and was scared.
This movie is by far the most realistic in the genre and presents a difficult dilemma for the protagonist, Gregory Peck. If he acts and he is wrong, he loses his Soul; if he doesn't act and he is wrong, the anti-Christ is unleashed on the world. He doesn't have a "just jump off the boat" option as in Speed 2 |

Interesting point about realism in the genre. I would have to put Rosemary's Baby in that group as well. Ruth Gordon's performance was certainly Oscar worthy. And this was the same old lady from Harold and Maude! |

Someone else mentioned THE RING and I felt I should comment.
|
Your girlfriend is REAL kinky. I like that
I saw aliens at my friend house around 1 am, then had to walk alone in the dark by myself for about 45 min with scenes of aliens hunting and tearing at me.
As an adult, The Ring was scary and disturbing.
Lastly, I don't find movies with puppets and bad animation (zombies, vampires and aliens) that scary..but I haven't seen 30 Days of Night yet. |

I wouldnt call David Lynch movies scary but there were a few scenes in Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive that that were creepy as hell.
Session 9 was shot in the abandoned Danvers State Mental Hospital and is best viewed alone. |

Session 9 was creepy as all hell and is one of the best movies to watch in the dark with the volume max that I can recall in recent memory.
And Lynch films, to me, are pretty much the very definition of psychological horror. That scene with Robert Blake making Bill Pullman call his house in Lost Highway gives me the chills even typing it, and pretty much all of Mulholland Drive past the Espresso scene scares the bejesus out of me, especially the scary guy in the back of the diner. |

I think the Robert Blake scene is hands down the creepiest scene ever shot. |

Cannibal Holocaust deserves an honorable mention.
| Quote: |
| The film caused some scandal in Italy at the time of its release. Ten days after premiering in Milan, the film was seized by the courts, and the director, Ruggero Deodato, was arrested and charged with obscenity. He was later charged with murder and faced life in prison on the belief that several of the actors were murdered for the camera. Deodato contacted Luca Barbareschi and told him to contact the three other actors who played the missing film team. He presented the actors, alive and well, to the courts, and thus, the murder charges were dropped. The film remained banned in Italy for another three years. |

It bored me to tears and I ended up fast forwarding through large chunks of it, so I can't say I really gave it a fair shake. Maybe seeing it in a theater and never having heard of it I might have had a different experience, but I'd read about it for so long that when it became easily available some years ago and I finally saw it I was underwhelmed. Kind of the same story with Bloodsucking Freaks.
About all I remember from Cannibal Holocaust is the poor turtle getting hacked up and some bodies impaled or burned or something and a bunch of mud. |

It does get off to a bit of a slow start and I can see how it's effect was lost due to overhype. Too bad. |
