Another thing I should mention is that one other thing I like about this program is that my wife and I each make lots of extra money completely within our contracts.
My wife teachers an after-school program at her main school, and teach teachers training classes, a weekly after-school class, and two evening classes for my employer- the city of Gimhae. All of this is covered under our contrats which state we can work for the city or public schools.
If you are willing to put in a few more hours and negotiate well with your school, it is not hard to legally make a lot of money.

Would you be so kind as to send us details of how you managed to secure such positions. We are a couple with a young child and this type of employment would suit us very well. We would need to start by the end of november. We are currently in korea. Unfortunately we cannot pm you as dave's has a min 25 posts before you can pm. Generally, we really don't have that much to say. Thank you.

I was part of the group of representative teachers that sat in on contract adjusting for this coming year. Our contracts already give us all of summer and winter that we don't have camps, but the wording of that is being clarified to make sure the schools all follow it. Also being allowed to leave soon after classes finish IS certainly in the new contracts, and sets us apart from many public schools in Korea.

Thanks again for the info. I just got the 2008 sample contract and I don't see where it says teacher's are allowed to leave after their classes are finished. Are they still refining it?

Quote:
② The Work Hours of Employee shall be eight(8) hours a day(including lunch hour), total 40hours(including work hours of additional school) per week and actual class instruction hours of Employee shall not exceed 25hours(including actual class instruction hours of secondary school) per week. If, however, Employee's actual class instruction hours exceed 25hours per week, Employee shall be entitled to extra pay at the rate applicable to Korean teachers extra pay.
③ Employee shall follow the normal Work Hours of the Korean Teachers. However, Employer can adjust Work Hours as he/she deems appropriate.

One negative you might want to address is the lack of airfare reimbursement for teachers not leaving Korea.

If you can't, then teaching in Jeollanamdo schools through Canadian Connections might be the go. Everyone I've met who went through them have been very happy. Usually get at least 4 weeks for winter and the same for summer.

Does anyone know if Jeollanamdo pays the 100,000 provincial bonus? According to EPIK they should, but the info I got from CC didn't say anything about it.

For anyone who works for EPIG:

Do you recommend working for one school or two? Working a second school pays extra, but is it worth the hassle? Are there problems getting coordinated schedules, e.g. with camps and special days off? Are the locations near each other or will there be a lot of traveling between them?

You'll never know until you sign the dotted line and get there.

Sure, but any anecdotal experiences would be useful.

Sorry, I've been on holiday with my wife in the US and Canada and haven't been on this site for a couple months.
Yes, there are new contracts starting this March, and they are better than before. Some teachers in our program doubted EPIG's promise to put in the new additions, but all doubt is over now, because we have the new contracts.
Briefly, EPIG is one of the best elementary school programs in Korea. No doubt about it. You will receive excellent service from Gimhae City Hall whenever you need it. This is the ONLY public school program in Korea that allows you to go home one hour after you finish classes, the ONLY public school program that requires the schools to give us a two-month notice if there will be any one-week camps during the summer or winter, and the ONLY public school program that has written in the contract that ALL summer and winter except possible camps is mandated vacation for us. As a result you can get up to 3-4 months of paid vacation every year! Nobody that has worked here has ever had any problems with pay, vacation, medical, pension, or any of that jazz. In fact, there is a high re-signing percentage (and a yearly signing bonus). There are lots of opportunities to make extra money at $35-40 hour legally with City Hall, so that is another big draw.
Contact Miss Hwang at Gimhae City Hall. Of course I am cannot post her e-mail on Dave's, but anyone can pm me for it.

Welcome back. Can you tell us a bit about Gimhae City? Is there any public transportation? Is it easy to get to Busan?

Gimhae?
400,000 people, 25 minute bus ride to Busan subway. Busan subway is coming out here out here, but it won't be finished for 2 more years yet. We have about 200 westerners here in Gimhae, and most congregate in one or two of the most popular bars in town in the evenings.
Gimhae's claim to fame is of course the international airport, and it is also the hometown of the former president of Korea. As a result Gimhae has had a lot of money allocated for development projects. We have first-class stadiums, a huge arts and sports center, and a number of museums. For hockey fans, we have two ice skating rinks.

Thanks Editor, I missed that comment. EPIG doesn't have a website yet, but I've been encouraging them to get one up soon.
Rates of pay are:
1- 2.5
2- 2.3
3- 2.1
4- 1.8

+ $300 starting bonus, 1 month completion bonus, $100 monthly rural, $100 monthly extra school, $100 monthly transportation allowance.
+ $35-$40/hour optional extra teaching opportunities for your contracted employer

So basically similar to EPIK or GEPIK, but in my opinion... better. Very Happy

Sorry Huffdaddy, I've been briefly skimming the threads, and I didn't pay attention and realize you had been quoting me and asking questions.

Yes, you had the old contract. The new contract has this addition:

Quote:
③ Employee shall follow the time to attend the school of the Korean teachers, however, Employee may leave the school one(1) hour after Employees normal classes end.

Regarding airfare reimbursement it is true that you should travel in order to receive a refund. But you can travel anywhere in the world equivalent to your home country, and several teachers have gone half-way through their contract and still gotten it refunded. The key is to be polite and respectful, and you will be treated the same here.

And you are right, huffdaddy, experience of current teachers is the best assurance of good treatment. That's how we got our jobs and I believe it is the ONLY way to go.

Well my wife is from Canada, so she calls it winnIPEG.
I suppose a Korean would pronounce it E-F-I-K-U-H or E-F-I-K-E-E Laughing
