| I mean like NEVER getting paid by their school and hung out to dry? I only knew one gy who got fired and it was basically his own fault. Seems like the true horror stories are fewer and farther between nowadays. |

Just because it isn't happening to you means all is well with everyone everywhere, eh? |

I can scarcely conclude how you arrived at that. When I first began work in Korea over two years ago the stories of teachers getting screwed were all over the place. It just seems like there's been a lull lately. |

Look at my past posts. I was not paid over 2.5 million and I was evicted cause my boss wouldn't pay my rent. |

So do YOU have any stories to the contrary or are you just trolling and wasting bandwidth? I did reread my original posting and I specifically asked for examples and thus far you've provided none. |

Disagreeing with your broad generalization that "everything is fine" is "trolling"?
I've posted plenty of times about my battle against Kids Herald in Hwajeong. |

You seem to be the one with the problem. I never said everything was fine. I merely made the observation that I am hearing less and less of true horror stories nowadays. I am not sure why that is. Could it perhaps be because of a change in policy towards crappy hagwons? I don't know. And since i started this thread yes I do consider it trolling when you misconstrue something I stated. You're the one who made the assumption that I believed everything was fine. I truly only met one guy who got fired from his contract and it was indeed his fault for coming into school with a hangover and puking all over the floor. I heard some other stories but never knew the people individually. What I was asking for were details and thus far this thread has been clogged with your meaningless banter. Either offer something useful or go. |

Try the job discussion board, this is a "job" thread no?
If what you think is true then maybe it is because Korean Immigration has taken up blatant discriminatory practices by applying blatant discriminatory rules to new E-2 Visa holders, thus keeping new teachers away, thus less fresh meat entering Korea which English school owners then cheat/steal against.

I fail to see the discriminatory aspect of someone with a criminal record not being able to teach children. As a new father, I shudder to think about trusting my child to someone who has showed or is showing bad enough judgement to break the law.
The Korean Consulates are in the process of allowing potential E2 visa applicants to do their interview via webcam in situations where distance is a concern. So there is no discrimination there.
Are the new policies perfect? No, but I think they are step in the right direction. Criminla and Medical checks should have been in place from the beginning. Personally, I think some sort of teaching background (education or experience) should be required as well.
I do the hiring at my school and am the supervisor of foreign teachers, I am glad they adopted these new requirements. I do not what my job security affected because some idiot wants to party over here. |

I think the fact that kyopos and F-series holders are NOT required to get a CRC in order to teach children is where the discrimination comes in. |

| Pay isn't the only way a school can shaft a foreign teacher. There are many ways. Yes, I know good, responsible teachers who've been seriously shafted. What always surprises me is when they decide to stay in Korea and try somewhere else... |

I've been here three and a half years and I personally know 6 people (including myself) who were screwed out of money on various levels.
It's a systemic problem in the hagwon system in this country. |

Yes!
A long time ago, when I worked at hakwons, two to be precise. Both of them refused to pay my severence. This was before the labor board took any interest in foreign hakwon workers and I ended up negotiating partial settlements.
One never paid into my health insurance. He also steadfastly refused to pay a down payment on phone service.
After he heard, I was not re-signing with him, he tried to cheat me on my airfare and threatened to call my future employer and tell him what a bad employee I was.
Everyday of work I was there was a day of mind games.
It is amazing I survived the year.
Though, I do think it made me stronger.
After a year and a little more in hakwons, I made the switch to universities and I have never looked back. It has been pretty much nothing but good experiences. But, my hakwon days are nothing but war stories.
And, it has definately colored my thinking about Korea. I see little good in the hakwon industry and the people who run them. At least, I have never met a good one.
Almost everyone I have ever met in Korea has had problems with hakwons too. |

In fact, I do. My first school still owes me 3.5m won. I'm currently trapped in the Korean legal system trying to get it paid. Maybe there's not a lull... maybe people just decided to stop complaining. |
