Am planning to get my private tutoring license from the gov't in the next few weeks. Has anyone tried advertising at local apartment complexes with fliers or whatnot? How does it work? We figured on contacting the main office. I'm assuming some kind of kickback or payment must be involved if we plan to advertise in the complex itself?

Anyone have past experience with this?

I'm sure the local hagwons would be quite pissed-off, however, we plan on doing it all as legally as possible (paying tax, etc.).

If I have an F-2 and a tutoring license, would this all be kosher?

My employer used to do this type of advertising a bit. He said you had to pay something but I have no idea how much. I think it is probably legit and not a kickback to the security guards. Would be cheaper (and more effective for face time) just to stand out front of an elementary school around the end of the day and give your name to parents picking up their kids though.

I remember seeing some advertisement on a telephone pole just in front of big apartment complex. The guy had made little strips of paper with his phone number on them and quite a few were gone... I guess some people were interested. Anyway, that's another thing you could try.

Once you have a few privates, if you do a good job and have a good relationship with the kids, they can often find you more to teach, either friends or relatives who'd like to have a private teacher.

Good luck!

Good luck actually getting your tutoring license.

A friend of mine tried to get his. The people didn't know how to do it and wouldn't live a finger in order to figure out how to do it. It was end of story because, for them, there was no story to being with.

Luckily, there are others on here who already have.

Just found this, and it was staring at me the whole time:

Just an update: I got my tutoring license approved, and will pick it up on Monday.

Bassexpander,

Congratulations.

Do you look as happy as the guy in your picture?

Very Happy

[Edited to say that I wasn't trying to be rude... I find his picture rather humourous] Smile
