If you have an E2 then you are only required to have a one way ticket.

I'm glad you asked.

I recently tried to enter Korea with my boyfriend, who was still waiting for his visa issuance number and had been unable to get it done in time (the immigration office took much longer than promised.) He tried explaining this to the check-in clerk, telling him that he was en route to Japan via Korea, but this didn't fly. In fact, the clerk called the manager, who helpfully informed us that he was "making the situation difficult for himself, and for them."

They gave him two options:
1) Give *written proof* that he has permission to stay in Korea (a printed contract and an email explaining the reason for the lack of visa sufficed, but it was very difficult to get to a computer with a printer at the airport)
or
2) Buy a refundable ongoing or return ticket, and then cash it in upon arrival.

The airline was Air Canada. They are the only airline I've ever known to kick up a fuss about this. However, they say that they could be fined large amounts of cash if they don't observe this rule.

Without a visa in your passport, or some convincing paperwork, a refundable return ticket is your safest bet!

Perhaps what the previous poster wrote is what happens now, but I first came to Korea with a one-way ticket on a tourist visa. When I entered the country, I just showed the address of the friend I was going to visit and that was it.

I think it depends on the airline. There's a rule but not everyone is willing to enforce it. Air Canada wants *paperwork* to cover their asses.

Yeah, it is the airline. Immigration in ICN doesn't care about you having an onward ticket.
