Has anyone tried or applied the principles/vocabulary of "Basic English" as developed by Ogden? It's a set of simplistic grammar and 850 word vocabulary that supposedly can be learned within a month with a capability of producing 90% of a student's ideas (specialized vocabulary isn't included). |

I took a look at the Ogden website, and there is a lot of information there. However, you will need a lot of time to process the foundational information to develop a working mastery of the approach. There is a way to teach functional language that includes a list of 500 - 1000 commonly used words in English that will produce up to 90% of all spoken English conversation.
I have been doing some writing and development of an approach that can teach comprehensive mastery of English in 6 moths, far exceeding the expectations of Koreans and testers alike. Still in development, but hopefully I will have a working model available within the next three to six months. It takes time to develop the database of usable sentences and expressions that will focus on real world language using English.
Good idea and certainly thinking outside of the box, which is a very good start to solving the problems we face as language instructors right now. |

Hello,
I am interested in using Basic English to teach my students. Right now I am teaching middle school students. Soon I am going to start teaching five classes of the lowest level first year students, and I would like to give them a good foundation.
So I would be interested in seeing anything that you have put together. I am also available to help you develop a program, if you need help. I have mostly been working with more recent research. It is good, but not there is no system. |
