I am currently penning my memoirs of my 1 1/2 years teaching in Korea. I was wondering with the exception of Shawn Matthew's book - Island of Fantasy, are there any others who have published any similar material? I have found a few books but they turned out to be basically blogs put into book form. I just want to get some alternate opinions and maybe some inspiration. I am up to chapter 5 of what will eventually be about 30 chapters.

What is the genre of the book?

I think there is a great comedy book ready to be written about this place.

There are to be many comical moments in it but in the end it's basically just a collection of my memoirs about Korea based on my experiences there. I wanted to write a book that would bring the eperience of the run of the mill teacher with all the struggles, hardships, and rewards that most of us experience while we are here. I read many self published books that teachers have written but they all seemed to be blogs put into book format. I start back in the states just before I leave for Korea. It's my goal to put a face on, or at least some rhyme and reason to the expat teacher experience that a person can relate to whether they are an expat/teacher or not.

Are you writing a NOVEL or a MEMOIR? Cause I've always been taught those are two different things.

I guess its a novel based on my memoirs. I have taken some liberties with some situations throughout the book. I did this to shift the flow of the book from overly boring since generally that is what most of the day to day life in Korea is. It really cannot be classified as an autobiography in that sense. I retain my name throughout the book however all the other characters' names are different. I would say in the end its more of a mix of the two. I guess you could say that it might be a little like Owen Wister's "The Virginian" in that the situations he described did happen but not in the exact context of the way the story was told.

I came to in Gumho-Dong
David Hazzan
A little too canadian for my tastes, (and all about pot and stuff) but an enjoyable if slightly un-professional read.

The online publisher currently selling Shawn's book has a few other Korea-related books as well. One has a photo of a woman and two or three kids. Quite pricey, though.

I'm currently writing a book about following one of Korea's professional football (soccer) clubs around the peninsula for an entire season, but it will contain lots of snippets about Korean life for us "foreigners" as well. Won't be released for another year or so, and probably only in the UK.
