I stayed up late and saw Nader announce on "Meet the Press", and I thought he made a fairly strong case for running again.
He had no trouble crisply responding to Tim Russert's pointed questions - especially those regarding his third-party bid as possibly enabling the Republicans to win again.
He said that if the Democrats couldn't defeat the Republicans this year by a landslide margin they should probably disband as a political party and do something else.
He emphasized that too many important issues were "off the table" among those still seriously in the running, including Israel's treatment of Palestinians, a single-payer health care plan, Pentagon waste, and corporate crime of various types.
Regarding Obama, he said that he's increasingly taking up corporate interests and has apparently abandoned his previous support of Palestinians.
And Hillary's campaign has been spoiled by public opinion strategists.
When a comment was made about his age (74) he sarcastically replied, "Thank you very much, Tim, I really like that." then thoughtfully added, "the only true aging is the erosion of one's ideals..."

I haven't watched Meet the Press yet (I will this afternoon as well as watching This Week), but Nader is going to face several problems.
As an indi candidate he has to get on the ballot in each state. I don't think he will in every state, they will probably pick states. My guess would be he'll try for most of the big ones as well as a handful of battleground states.
If I were to make a guess, I'd say:
Florida
California
Oregon
Washington
Texas
Penn
Missouri
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Iowa
Colorado
Virginia
Ohio
Michigan
Those would be the states he'd need to be on the ballot and make a strong showing in half of them which would essentially sew up a McCain Whitehouse. |
