| You know why they call it the xbox 360? Because when you see it you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away. |
No, that's the X-Box 180. |

Which is quite funny, because everyone -- and I mean everyone -- expected HD-DVD to have a huge advantage due to their name.
It seems to be the logical progression.... you own DVD, so why wouldn't you want to upgrade to HD-DVD, right?
As it turned out, "upscaling" DVD players were sold (even by Toshiba, the maker of HD-DVD) with advertising stating that they would make DVDs upscale to HD quality. "Upscaling" DVD players merely take a normal DVD and scale it to fit the newer/larger LCD and Plasma screens so that the image looks good. That totally confused people, and killed HD-DVD. Everyone bought the $40 HD Upscaling DVD players and assumed they were getting HD. Many people even bought HD-DVD movies assuming they would play in their HD-upscaling DVD player! The discs didn't work, so they returned them. They were confused and some probably felt cheated.
Meanwhile, here was Blu-ray with a totally different name and product. There was no confusion -- it was better than regular DVD, and you knew you didn't own it if you only had a regular or upscaling DVD player.
Even the magazine writers are surprised by how this name issue turned out to be a big advantage for Blu-ray when it was always assumed the opposite would happen. |
Do you use Google, or Search.com?
I think that question answers the debate about the name. |
