Actually for the many boards that I've been on for donkey years I can't say that the people here are as friendly and as helpful as some people think. Its more like a "we are THE group so yeah pick a number and get in line if you want to be a part of it" kind of thing.

Sometimes people lose touch of normality and start thinking they're more important than they think they are (who also tend to be incredibly ungrateful), while others are so incredibly helpful they inspire you to return the favour to others which I still do.

And pkang, computers are a hobby! There's no getting away from them (CS alumni here).

Damn dude. You don't think I am helpful? You don't think demo, beaver, superhero, kpprok, spliff (yes, even spliff) are helpful? What about the gang load of others I haven't even mentioned? They aren't helpful either? Wow. That's messed up. Seriously.

I know what he means CL. Other Tech sites are very polite. This one is too, but it's not a Tech site. It's part of an ESL forum. That means that we have many incursers into the Tech forum who are from The Badlands of the the general, off-topic or, gulp, current affairs.

I don't have to say that there are quite a few good guys here who know their tech and will hlep as much as possible.

I didn't say you or anyone. Its just the impression I get from being on an ESL site.

Say if I logged on as a one-eyed, 78 year old female pensioner with a new found zest for computers but still very much a PC-idiot, I would be getting assistance in droves. Maybe its the age group I dunno.

True. I stand corrected. I guess it's like comparing apples to oranges here. You're right, this isn't a TRUE tech. forum.

Most regular posters here are quick to give advice, but there does seem to be a little clique that exists. I have always appreciated any help or insight even though I am not in that circle.

I like to just have a little tech with my esl discussion. I don't actually like the hardcore tech sites because I don't have the time to be up-to-date on everything. I like to read about standard normal problems...and I often have some advice. I am more polite in the tech forum than in the rest of the discussion groups (some know I am a bit of a jerk)...because the people usually are trying to help people for free and I often learn something new. I am not part of the in-group but still feel most people are doing their best to help out fellow ESL people...a simple thank-you would be payment enough if they have helped you.

Hmm...cliques and in-groups?

Well, I guess there are those that know and those that don't, just like any discipline, study or hobby group. I don't see a lot of condescension or talking down to in this forum, but then, maybe I am the one doing it unknowingly and if so, unintentionally.

Anyhow, the bottom line is that this is an EFL forum with a tech add-on. Its cool that we have regulars here who all have diverse interests in the sub-groupings of tech, and that makes it quite well-rounded.

So wait a minute, I'm confused. You complain that there is an "in-group" and people who want to join have problems b/c we're apparently selective in offering "membership." But also you say that a 78 year old woman would have no problem being "allowed to join" or get lots of assistance?

OK.

I haven't noticed any talking down on here, except maybe a few posts here and there when people start with Mac vs. PC stuff. Maybe I, like demo, just don't notice it b/c it's me!

Don't know. But I think this is a mighty fine little tech forum for what we need. Anyone on the site could post a problem here or ask a question and probably get at least a few competent and good answers. What else could we need?

I love the tech forum.

I've never felt talked down to, even though I have to get on the internets to look up half the terms I read here on The Google.

Easily the best forum on Dave's.

Alright Esetters, you outted us. The price is $25USD per person to get in. You must forward your resume to us via PM so that we may review it. Please, no ESL resumes either. Only your tech. experience please. Very Happy Wink

I would have hoped that a native Floridian would have that charge waived (you are from Florida as well, right?) Wink I fear that my resume would not be sufficient as I don't play PC games or have much tech knowledge. Laughing

Laughing I went to UNC-Chapel Hill (had to get out of Florida for awhile) and catch hell for that one from the locals. Born and raised in (407) myself.
