| I am curious about this. How does a current E-2 holder here renew/get a new visa when they switch jobs? |

| Yeah I'd like to know this too. Is it possible to do runs, if you switch companies. All the processing of documents takes a long time. |

I'm surprised this hasn't been answered already.
I'm 99% sure that visa runs are a thing of the past. You can only get a visa in your home country. Not only that, but you can no longer renew/extend your visa, even with the same employer. So, when my visa expires in November I have to leave the country. For that reason, this is most definitely my final year in Hangukistan.

I am currently in Thailand awaiting my VISA processing to return to Korea. This is what I have been told by Korean immigration. If you have previously worked in Korea on an E-2 VISA you do not have to return to your home country to renew that VISA. The only people that must apply for and recieve the VISA in their home country are first time applicants to teach in Korea. For example "Johnny X" took his first job abroad in Thailand and then applied to teach in Korea when his contract was finished. According to the new regs, he would have to return to the US, Canada wherever to get a VISA. Now if he had taught in Korea then went to Thailand for a year and taught there, he could reapply and do all his processing through the local consulate without having to return home.
I am not sure what the regs are for teachers whose contracts are up in Korea but I know that former ESL Korea teachers who are residing abroad are not required to return home for re remployment. You might find some different views on this even in official documents but the K Immigration were not prepared for the Pandora's box that was opened. They are kinda making things up as they go now. for example if you live too far to travel to a Korean consulate they will allow the interview to be done by webcam  |
