|
|
I've always used AceFTP and it's worked great (computer to console), but the KT guy came last week and replaced our cable (the one that looks like a phone cable, for the internet) and now I my computer doesn't recognize a link when I hook it up to the console. No connection. Could it simply be the kind of cable I'm using?
Any advice? |

I think you need to define/be more specifc with the word "console". Like, a video game console? Also, what is the replaced cable plugged into (it sounds like it's probably a DSL cable)? Was anything else changed? When you mention a link, are are you referring to any connection whatsoever, or just to a specific file/folder/whatever? And how are you "hooking it up to the console?"
Sorry, but vagueness doesn't help a single bit with computer stuff :/ -- it's like telling your doctor stuff that doesn't help him figure out what the problem is |

Sorry, I should have been more specific. Here are some details:
*I'm transferring from a desktop to an Xbox
*Nothing was changed except the cable, as far as I know
*I'm not sure what type of cable I had before, but it allowed internet access and FTP transfer. Apparently this new one simply allows only internet access (on the cable I can read "UL type CM ETL verified Cat .5 UTP TIA/EIA, etc.)
*Before, I simply connected the Xbox to the desktop with the old cable, started up AceFTP, and transferred the files. Now, when I connect the cable, I see the little icon in the corner that means "no connectivity". This leads me to believe that something is funky about the new cable (maybe it only works for the internet?)
Thanks in advance! |

As far as I know there's no such thing as a cable that blocks ftp. I don't think that sounds possible. More likely something else changed and you just don't know it. Reset routers, make sure you don't have ftp disabled anywhere etc...
Are you sure everything besides ftp is working? |

Okay, I THINK I know what your problem is.
The cable was probably replaced with a non-crossover cable... you would need a crossover cable to directly connect your PC to your Xbox
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable
You can probably Google and find more info if you need to...
Sorry, can't help with you with how to say crossover cable in Korean
But I hope this helps. I think that's what the problem is |

Thanks for the advice. Ironically, I forgot to mention the one essential piece of information on the entire cable, the 568B!
I might add that I have another cable in my home that doesn't work for FTP transfers, either. So basically, the KT guy took the only cable in my house that works for FTP!!!
Why the heck did he take the old cable anyway? What an ass! Is that standard operating procedure in Korea? |

Most people don't know about crossover cables because they don't really have a use for 'em.
The thing is, is that from a distance (and even up close without careful inspection), a non-crossover cable and a crossover cable look EXACTLY the same. The only you would tell is by any labeling that would tell you otherwise or by analyzing the coloring of the wires that make up the cable at both ends of the cords. Probably explains why he replaced it with a non-crossover cable... as for explaining why he replaced it in the first place, I have no clue |

Wow. Apparently, finding one of these crossover cables is like discovering Atlantis. I've checked Lotte Mart, Homever, and all the local usual suspects. They all only carry direct cables. What's so special about a crossover cable? |

if you wanna bring out the inner geek in you. you can try this.
if you want to buy one you have to go to a lan/cable/specialty electronics or order from the internet. Seon-In Plaza@yongsan is the best place to get it.
