I recently spent a week in Jordan.

Prices are on par with the west, but the place has a very 2nd world, run-down feel to it.

Lots of people speak a very high level of English, and the locals were generally pretty cool and easy to like and get along with.

The most awful thing for me (the thing that really killed it) was the omnipresent smoking.

You can't escape it. They smoke in the malls, in the hospitals

Shocked everywhere.

So if you hate 2nd hand smoke as I do, avoid the middle east.
