Hi All,

Maybe this was a stupid mistake to make but on my recent trip to Tokyo there was no way I could exchange money outside bank hours except at the airport and the ATMs were weird and didn't give me any yen on any card.

Rolling Eyes

Thought I would warn others going there.

Japan is a lot like Korea - it's hit and miss but mostly miss.

Only Japanese ATM cards will work in Japanese ATM machines, most often.

Try and find a City Bank in Shinjuku or Ikebukaro or Shibuya.

Thanks! Will be better informed in future.

Will try the post office in future....of course having an Australian card probably didn't help...better yet I will take more yen if I go again, sometimes unpredictable..

If you can't find a Citibank or Postal ATM, you can ask for an English speaking employee at any bank who can help you do a cash advance from your debit card. You'll need to present your passport as a form of ID.

Tokyo's a relatively easy place to visit, you just gotta know what to do and what's available.
