I want to take a long weekend trip to China. I was wondering what city is better if you are only staying 3 days. Any recommendations would be appreciated (especially from those who have been to both places).

I guess it depends on what you want to see.
Shanghai is more condensed and busy-feeling. High energy. Not as much cultural stuff, but a lot of modern stuff.
Beijing has wide-streets and feels a lot more laid-back, and has tons of cultural stuff and tourism stuff. |

If you have only three days go to Shanghai.
You need at least a good week to experience Beijing as there is so much to do. With only three days you'll feel like you missed out on so much.
Both places are awesome, but for the short amount of time you have go to Shanghai. |

| Beijing all the way. Having been to both, Shanghai is more of a shopping destination for high-end western products-nothing you can't get in Seoul. Yes, Shanghai has a few tourist attractions but when compared to Beijing, not even close. Beijing is THE China destination. Go to Beijing. |

Yeah, but she's only got three days.
I agree that Beijing is better than Shanghai, but if you're going to go to Beijing at least spend a week there. There's so much stuff to do and if you had only three days you'd feel like you missed out on so much. |

| Even with only 3 days, go to Beijing. Shanghai is impressive and fun, but I feel like for the first time visitor to China, Beijing is the best. |

If you plan very well, you can hit up all the major sites in Beijing within 3 days. For example:
Day 1 morning: Temple of Heaven
Day 1 afternoon: Forbidden City/Tiananmen Square
Day 1 evening: Wangfujing (most modern/hip shopping area in Beijing, has a famous night market) -- there is also a Quanjude Beijing duck place there
Day 2 morning/afternoon: Great Wall at Mutianyu
Day 2 afternoon/evening: goto Houhai and check out the hutongs, grab some drinks at the bars there
Day 3 morning: Summer Palace
Day 3 afternoon: Peking University
Day 3 evening: Wudaokou, the Koreatown for college Koreans -- there is also a Quanjude Beijing duck place here near the Google building
It would be very busy and fast paced. If you want to relax, I'd recommend Shanghai.
