Electron filmed in motion for the first time
Technique use short pulses of light called attosecond pulses

updated 12:30 p.m. ET Feb. 25, 2008
Scientists have filmed an electron in motion for the first time, using a new technique that will allow researchers to study the tiny particle's movements directly.

Previously it was impossible to photograph electrons because of their extreme speediness, so scientists had to rely on more indirect methods. These methods could only measure the effect of an electron's movement, whereas the new technique can capture the entire event.

Wow! That's so amazing, and that's going to have lots of implications for quantum sciences. Where before it was impossible to measure the speed of an electron, as one could only measure its position or effect, now it is possible to actually monitor the electron itself. I imagine that this could usher in a whole new wave of technology based on quantum principles.

The research possibilities are endless. If we can measure an electron in every stage of its orbit in the electron cloud, can we then begin to slow down the electron or dissect its fundamental parts?

Previously the position of an electron was basically thought to be random. Instead of the red balls orbiting a nucleus (a graphic designed in the past 100 years by a Japanese researcher), electrons are actually far less predictable. They do not travel by prefixed routes, but instead seem to appear more or less randomly in a general sphere around the nucleus. It's absolutely amazing to think that it is now possible to OBSERVE this event.

Mark my words -- and I'm not exaggerating here -- this has the potential to usher in a new era of science and development.

That is very interesting....on a sidenote, the stuff that's about to take place at C.E.R.N. (Centre European de la Recherche Nuclear) in Switzerland is going to be even more amazing. I can't wait until it fully opens this year.

It's nice to know there are some other Physics nerds here in Korea.

I guess I just don't understand why people WOULDN'T get excited at developments in quantum physics. Seriously, folks, this is some (literally) fundamental stuff!

Many people don't get excited about science, because they don't understand it, nor care to. But, more and more, people will see science for what it is; the most interesting of all human endeavours.
