I loved the movie, but didn't really understand why everyone was raving about him. At first, I actually thought that Paul Dano gave a better performance.
BUT
I had never really seen him as himself before seeing the film. Once I saw an interview with him, I completely got it. He is so vastly different from his character that it makes his performance incredible. |

I thought this film was just so-so. Lots of holes in the story for me, actions taken for no good reason. DDL was excellent though. Felt like a below average episode of Deadwood.
The sound track irritated me. I rarely, if ever notice the musical score, but I did in this one. |

To me it felt like a whole lot of remarkable bits that drew attention to themselves and took from the movie.
Daniel Day Lewis was doing something interesting with the character, but I never for a second forgot I was watching DDL being brilliant when I should've been engrossed in Daniel Plainview the character.
The score was interesting in an avant garde sort of way, but didn't seem to fit well with the film
The cinematography was gorgeous, but once again, noticing it drew me out of the movie, rather than into it.
MAybe I'm old fashioned, but I want to be transported by movies, and TWBB felt like a collection of kids at a playground yelling, "look Ma! no hands!" |

Has anyone read the novel 'Oil!' (Upton Sinclair) that the movie is taken from? I picked it up at Kyobo, but haven't read it yet. |

When I watch most movies with hollywood actors, I think that I can act as well as them with a little training. But Daniel Day Lewis, hello no. I couldnt do that in a million years. Guy is insane. |

-From what I've read, he's done just 3 movies in the past ten years. |
Yeah he came out of semi retirement to do gangs of New York...
He was studying pottery and living in Tuscany Italy, he said in an interview he waits for the right role to come along and once he commits to it, thats it! He becomes that person 24/7 and never stops being that person until the final shot! And it shows he is one of the most committed actors around today! MY left foot! I mean come on!! Gangs of New York the guy is amazing!
Ive seen most of his movies and he can carry a whole movie no problem!
not the case becuause all his movies are character driven pieces! Want to see some early films of his which are great...
Try... The Bounty with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins.

Daniel Day Lewis should have won the Oscar for Bill "The Butcher" Cutting in Gangs of New York... |

He was at his understated best in "The Boxer", but he was still great in "In The Name Of The Father". |
