| Does evil really triumph in the film, or do we just feel like it does because it's not punished in the way we're used to? Look at it. How does it really end? The bad guy is busted all to hell, alive yes, but nearly completely physically destroyed, and the good guy is left to retire peacefully with his wife. How, again, does evil triumph? It's out there, and it doesn't go away, but does it really win? |

It's strange because I thought all the performances were excellent. The woman who played Moss' wife was fantastic. The scene when Chigur first plays the coin flip game was worth the price of admission and better than many movies, but the ending needed something. I'm not even sure what. You can have great movies where evil triumphs - Silence of the Lambs for one and even the Kevin Costner movie Mr Brooks (though I liked No Country better, I found Mr Brooks' ending more satisfying).
No Country for Old Men = very good.
Miller's Crossing = excellent. |
The actress is Kelly Mcdonald. She is Scottish. She was in Trainspotting and was the teenage schoolgirl who was Renton's sort of gf. |

| To get back on topic a little, I'd like to hear from the folks who voted for O Brother. I understand Fargo, Barton Fink, and Miller's Crossing, even No Country and Raising Arizona, but O Brother is a mystery to me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, as I have all their films, but it just doesn't stack up as far as I'm concerned. The soundtrack is great, yes, the cinematography is marvelous, yes, however, none of that keeps the film from becoming slightly tedious or overstaying it's welcome. I delighted in the American epic aspect of it, but the whole thing drags and is just a bit, uh, dull, or flat or something. How do you justify this as their best film? |

He's not busted to hell. He broke his arm, and he was able to walk away.
Evil triumphs because Chiguhr has not been punished by society and made to account for his dastardly deeds.
He gets into a car crash. Big woop. He doesn't die, which would have been the only fitting retribution for his crimes.
In the end he accomplishes his mission fully, gets the cash, stays true to his word, doesn't get caught, and doesn't die. What more do you need to happen here?
I thought it was pretty cool that he IS punished a little by fate, as he often cited fate as a party to his actions. |

He did get pretty shot up prior to that as I recall, and he doesn't seem to me like the kind of guy to check into the hospital with a busted arm. I'd say he's going to have a couple of bum limbs for the rest of his days. |

| I always took that scene where Tommy Lee Jones is telling that story about the cattle guy who had the captive bolt pistol and how he wrenched up his arm to say that Chigurh wouldn't be able to kill again, or at least not in the manner in which he was accustomed to. Which would be the kind of small useless victory that both McCarthy and the Coens would enjoy. |
