It seems to be ingrained in the Korean psyche that the Japanese copy everything. I hear this a lot.

Ironic, yes?

Well, the Japanese have copied a lot of stuff but improved it as well. I'd say they are the opposite of the Chinese who copy everything but make crap with that.

The Japanese can take an idea & turn it into something that the world admires and respects.

The Koreans pretty much copy anything that they're allowed to by companies that give them the rights to produce, but under somewhat controlled quality control. Koreans though have never fully taken an idea & made took it to its full potential to the world. They just pretty much have very low creativity.

The Chinese pretty much copy anything they see & do a piss poor job of it making "Made in China" the worlds greatest warning label of consumer danger.

Never heard any Korean say that, but yes it would be ironic. Many seem to have a hate/envy fixation with Japan

You've got to wonder what most Korean products would be like if they didn't have the Japanese to copy and compete against as an example. Not only products (cars, computers, etc), but pop culture too (trends in fashion, music, movies, comics, variety shows, design, etc. etc. ).

Speaking of copying, the JYP tour is going to New York and LA. I've just got to wonder what the non-Korean audience (if there are any) will be thinking about it. "Wow, um, Korean cover versions of RnB, Hip Hop, 80's cheese pop, and radio ballads. Hmm...how much did I pay for that ticket?" I love the "Tell Me" song though.

Yeah, what's with the Japanese image? For years in America, they were branded as copycats who steal all our ideas, make them better and cheaper, and then sell them back to us. But then their economic slump hit, and we didn't feel so threatened. And now, through the magic of the internet, they're known as being super creative, at least as far as gameshows, porn, vending machines, robots and other sundry wacky sh*t is concerned.

I don't hear that too much from Koreans.

What I do hear a lot is that Japan copied a lot of Korean culture way back when. One book you'll find in all the bookstores---don't remember the name, "Roots of Japanese Civilization," or something---claims that "high civilization" didn't exist in Japan until Koreans brought it. You'll see similar things stated on official websites here and in museums, and said by Koreans.

They take pride in their position in the line of inheritence. There's the pride by association after deriving so much culture from the mighty Chinese, and then there's the pride in putting down the mighty Japanese and claiming that all of Japan's culture comes from Korea (even though all the culture comes from China and India).

I have heard that Japanese copied Kimchi and then the Japanese said they invented it.

Japanese TV shows (when I was subscribing) are much more interesting and inventive than Korean shows are. For instance, all the youtube TV clips worth watching are from Japanese shows.

I haven't heard about the copying thing before but there is a strong hatred for various other reasons even by the young and unaware... that would mostly be brought down from their relatives etc... one kid in my class would be a prime example of bigotry without any personal experience... "

"Would you like to learn how to do a Russian dance?" - [No, because the Russians said they help us, but then no, so they are bad (referring to one of the many wars in history)]

{pointing to a picture of a Korean girl doing a traditional fan dance in our student book}[I think this picture was draw by Japanese] ??? "And why do you say that?" [because she's no beautiful]... "and?..." [just I think!]

ahhh... young minds being molded...

Shocked Gee...I hope they don't start copying Korean women. That would be disasterous.

In my year in Japan, I came to admire their improvements to or, at least, maintainment of other countries' traditions and creations, for the most part.

The opposite is true for my two years plus in Korea.

If the Japanese copied Korean women, massage parlors in other countries would sky rocket. Plastic surgery would also boom in Japan. Laughing

China can do a bang up job....it just depends on the company that orders the product. Many go to china to order "cheap crap" to be produced....if you want higher quality, they'll do that too(for a price).

Youtube introduced me to the China/Japan/Korea/Thailand *beep* fencing that goes on. Chinese claim Koreans take credit for their history. Koreans claim the same thing back.

I swear to god, if you're Canadian, any time spent in Korea gives you a whole new appreciation on Canadian attitudes towards Americans. We really got to stop our biatching. We sound like squid eating, primping k-boys who can't vent their rage at having to carry their GF's purse and instead turn their anger on Japan and China for supposed crimes that I bet 80% of them would help take part in if the Japanese occupiers offered them 10,000 dotori and a hack that lets them cheat at Sudden Attack to turn in their teacher with a Korean printing press.

And in Japanese museums, though not to the degree you see in Korea. Koreans monks introduced Buddhism and Chinese writing to Japan, which were respectively the first proper religions and writing systems in the islands. The Japanese rulers brought in plenty of Korean monks to bring books and artistic knowledge until they were capable of getting it straightfrom China, but even then that was a decade-long process at best and they still relied quite a bit on Koreans.

And in Japanese museums,

What I love about Korean museums is how they don't match the oral history. It goes like this. King Sejong made this marvelous hangul alphabet and it was an amazing gift to all the Korean people and he's celebrated in song and dance and it's given Koreans the highest literacy rate on the planet blah blah. And then you go to a museum and notice anyone with a brain still used chinese characters until the Japanese came along and told everyone they can't use hangul...
